Karl Theodor Traitteur , from 1790 Edler von Traitteur , (born April 6, 1756 in Philippsburg , † January 13, 1830 in Mannheim ) was the Palatinate-Bavarian court librarian and court historiographer , as well as geographer , author and poet.

The Traitteur family was of Catholic faith and came from Lorraine . Karl Theodor von Traitteur was the son of from Maikammer coming fürstbischöflich speyerischen court councilor and bailiff Johann Adam Traitteur, and his wife Eva Elisabeth Durass from Weyher in der Pfalz . His brother Johann Andreas von Traitteur (1752-1825) was an engineer and a pioneer of balloon flights . The family lived in Philippsburg .

Karl Theodor von Traitteur was married to Magdalena von Rogister (1766–1789) and had three children with her.
The daughter's name was Magdalena Traitteur (1786–1867) and was later only called “Loni”. She married the Mannheim economist Friedrich Deurer. His son Wilhelm von Traitteur (1788-1859) worked as a well-known bridge builder in Russia. One twin (1788- <1789) died in infancy before the mother.

In 1790 he had the court sculptor Franz Conrad Linck create a touching memorial for his first wife , which was transferred in 1873 from the old Mannheim Catholic cemetery in K 2 to the main cemetery in Mannheim . In the meantime there is only a copy of it and the valuable original is in the Reiss Museum . In front of this grave monument of the first woman stands the tombstone of Karl Theodor von Traitteur, who is decorated with theatrical masks because of his artistic activity.

Karl Theodor entered into a second marriage with Katharina Rothan.
Three children emerged from this connection:

  • Friedrich Traitteur 1795–1839, became a lieutenant
  • Johann Friedrich Traitteur 1798–1879, also became a lieutenant
  • Elise Traitteur 1800–1873

Live and act

He received his doctorate in 1786 from Heidelberg University , where he taught geography . In the same year he appointed Elector Karl Theodor of the Kurpfälzische Academy of Sciences to Mannheim and appointed him Hofhistoriographen; In 1788 he became court librarian. He also served as court judge .

With his brothers Jacob, Conrad and Johann Andreas Karl Theodor Traitteur was on September 14, 1790, Noble of Traitteur ennobled . In 1808 he was accepted as an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In addition to his official duties, Karl Theodor von Traitteur published scientific papers such as “On the size and population of the Rhenish Palatinate” (1789) or “The loss of the German imperial estates on the left bank of the Rhine” (1799). However, he also wrote the libretto for the opera “Albert III. von Bayern ” , which the composer Georg Joseph Vogler set to music and the play “ Das Purschenleben ” (1780). The city of Mannheim named a street after him.
