Karl Uhde

Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Uhde (born August 21, 1813 in Hohegeiß , † September 1, 1885 in Braunschweig ) was a German surgeon and secret medical councilor in Braunschweig.

family

Karl Uhde came from a family born in Königslutter who has been in the higher forest service since 1663. His father Ferdinand Uhde († 1856) was employed as a forest clerk in Hohegeiß and was later transferred to Seesen as a riding forester . Uhde's mother Karoline geb. Riemann was the daughter of a nail smith and trucker in Hohegeiss.

Life

Karl Uhde attended high school in Wolfenbüttel from 1824 to 1834 and then studied medicine in Göttingen , Halle (Saale) , Zurich and Freiburg im Breisgau , where he received his doctorate in 1838. After a short stay in Vienna , he went back to the Duchy of Braunschweig and, after his state examination in 1842, settled as a general practitioner in Holzminden . In the same year he made a catalog of the medical department in the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel .

In 1843/44 Uhde went on a study trip to the most important German, Swiss, Italian, French, English and Dutch universities and after his return, at the instigation of his father's friend, Brunswick city director Wilhelm Bode, became head of the surgical department of the ducal hospital and the teacher of the Surgery at the Collegium anatomicum-chirurgicum in Braunschweig. He arranged the library and the pathological-anatomical collection there and created catalogs that were later printed at state expense. In 1846 he was appointed professor of surgery and in 1854 as full professor in the ducal senior medical school. In addition, Uhde ran an extensive private practice in Braunschweig and, because of his reputation as an extraordinarily skilled surgeon, a large advisory activity that often extended beyond the borders of the duchy. In 1857 Uhde received the title of Medical Councilor and in 1887, on the occasion of his 40-year service at the ducal hospital, that of a Secret Medical Councilor .

Uhde published his first scientific-medical work in 1847, which was followed by 74 other publications. In addition to the modern languages, he also learned Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic and Sanskrit. He had a great historical interest, gave small historical lectures at foundation festivals of the medical association and collected autographs . In 1864 he was offered a position as professor of surgery at the University of Bern , which he refused. In 1872 Uhde was a co-founder of the German Society for Surgery and was awarded high Brunswick and Prussian medals. From 1872 to 1875 he was chairman of the Braunschweig Medical Association.

On May 30, 1844, Karl Uhde married Emilie Baumgarten, a daughter of the Wolfenbüttel Higher Regional Court Councilor Karl Baumgarten. His daughter Margarethe was married to the Braunschweig professor of zoology and botany, Wilhelm Blasius , from 1886 .

After his death on September 21, 1885, Uhde found his final resting place in the cemetery of the Reformed Congregation in Juliusstrasse in Braunschweig.

Honors

In 1860 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
