Karl Wilhelm von Wegern

Karl Wilhelm von Wegern (born October 16, 1785 in Tarnowitz , † January 18, 1850 in Danzig ) was a Prussian major general and commandant of the Weichselmünde fortress .

He was the son of the mayor of Schwiebus Karl Ferdinand von Wegern (1734–1797) and his wife Maria, née von Rothenburg. His father was the page of Prince Heinrich of Prussia in his youth .

Life

Wegern joined the Prussian Army's miners corps on November 13, 1800 as a private corporal . On November 17, 1801 he was second lieutenant , transferred to the mine corps in Graudenz and took part in the successful defense of the fortress during the Fourth Coalition War. For this he received special recognition on December 8, 1809. After the Treaty of Tilsit , Wegern was transferred to the engineer corps on February 12, 1810 and promoted to lieutenant prime on August 27, 1813 .

During the Wars of Liberation he took part in the capture of Thorn and received the Iron Cross II class and the Order of St. Vladimir IV class. Wegern also took part in the battles at Großgörschen , Leipzig and Paris as well as the siege of Wittenberg and the assault on Arnhem . At that time he was promoted to staff captain on January 22, 1814 .

On June 13, 1815, he came back to the engineering corps in Graudenz as Captain II. On April 20, 1816, he joined the 1st Engineer Brigade as Captain First Class. On January 10, 1821, he was transferred to Danzig as commander of the 1st pioneer division. Wegern advanced to major on March 19, 1826 with a patent from March 14, 1826 . As such, he was transferred to the second engineer inspection on July 14, 1828, and on March 30, 1837, he was appointed commander of the Weichselmünde fortress . On April 22, 1837, he was given permission to wear the army uniform. On March 30, 1839 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on September 10, 1840 to colonel . On 19 March 1844 he was with the character as a major general to the disposition provided. He died on January 18, 1850 in Danzig, where he was buried on January 21, 1850 in the St. Katharinen Cemetery.

Wegern married on November 17, 1806 in Graudenz Johanna Karoline Martini (1784-1837), the daughter of the citizen Martini from Graudenz. The couple had several children:

After the death of his first wife, he married Albertine Amalie Ludowike Sachse (1811–1886), a daughter of Captain Andreas Gottfried Sachse, on July 18, 1839 in Danzig. The couple had two children:

  • Ernst Emil Hugo (1840–1841)
  • Kurt Oskar Theodor (1842–1847)
