Karl Count Bigot de Saint-Quentin

Karl August Leopold Count of Bigot de Saint-Quentin (born June 12, 1805 in Neuburg an der Donau , † September 8, 1884 in Kwassitz (Kvasice) ) was an Imperial and Royal Real Privy Councilor , treasurer , Austrian officer ( general of the cavalry , owner of the kk Uhlan Regiment No. 8) and writer.

Life

The son of Lieutenant Field Marshal Franz Ludwig von Bigot de Saint-Quentin was educated in the cadet corps in Munich and joined an Austrian dragoon regiment on January 16, 1824 as a second lieutenant.

In 1848/49 he took part in the battles against the Hungarians , first as a major in the Archduke Karl-Ulanen, and from July 1, 1849 as Lieutenant Colonel Wing Adjutant of the Banus Feldzeugmeister Count Joseph Jelačić von Bužim . In the latter position he remained until he was appointed Colonel and Commander of the Dragoon Regiment Prince Eugene of Savoy on November 5, 1850.

He married on 13 October 1851 in Mauer near Vienna with Caroline, nee Countess of Sternberg (born July 9, 1804 in Vienna , † December 31, 1881 ibid), Order of the Starry Cross - and court lady , widowed Countess Lamberg. The marriage remained childless. He had only one nephew, the future general of the cavalry Anatol .

On September 30, 1857 the Count was major general and in 1859 first adjutant general of the 3rd Army and the Emperor, then on June 19, 1860 Lieutenant Field Marshal and 2nd owner of the Imperial and Royal Uhlan Regiment No. 8. At the same time he became the last governor and commanding general in the crown land of the Voivodeship of Serbia and the Temesian Banat . On November 18, 1866, he became the commanding general in Lemberg , then on April 22, 1868 he was promoted to general of the cavalry and resigned from service as such in Lemberg on August 1, 1869 at his own request.

Its importance was also in the field of writing. He was the author of several books, the last two of which - according to Bernhard von Poten - pursued the purpose of awakening and promoting a sense of military qualities and knightly virtues in the offspring of the Imperial and Royal Army. They were found to be highly suitable and of lasting value at the time.

With his work Von einer German Soldier , he made clear his very conservative conviction of the army's internal stabilization function. He saw the army as the defender of the throne and conservative virtues, against the criticism of the bourgeois-liberal camp. He castigated the "greed of the revolutionary masses" and the "selfishness of the bourgeoisie". Without ironic distance, he propagated the "knight" as an ideal, the "higher ideals of weapon theory" would continue to have an effect on contemporary soldiers. Before the First World War , there was a return in Austrian officer circles to the conservative virtues extolled by Bigot.

He had a particularly deep friendship with Count Franz Folliot de Crenneville .
