Karl Otto Ehrenreich von Winning (born June 24, 1784 in Sandau , † October 17, 1849 in Schwedt / Oder ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Karl was a son of Karl Otto Ehrenreich von Winning (1752-1838) and his wife Sophie Dorothea, née Hesse (1762-1823). His father was a colonel and commander of the Leib-Karabiner-Regiment as well as a knight of the order Pour le Mérite . His younger brother Ferdinand (1790–1875) became a Prussian lieutenant general.

Military career

Winning received his education at the Berge monastery . On February 15, 1798 he joined the Prussian Army's Leib-Karabiner-Regiment as a standard junker and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by the end of November 1803 . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Jena , was assigned to the 2nd Dragoon Regiment in 1807 and made inactive after the Peace of Tilsit in 1808 with half pay. Like his brother, Winning joined Schill and took part in his train. For this he was followed by a military court to three months imprisonment sentenced.

On October 27, 1812, Winning came to Potsdam as a district officer for the gendarmerie . In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he was transferred to the Kurmärk Landwehr Cavalry Regiment on May 1, 1813, as leader of the 3rd Squadron. There he rose on June 1, 1813 to Rittmeister and squadron chief . He fought in the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Leipzig , Laon , Ligny and Waterloo . He also took part in the battles at Wittstock, Zahna, Soissons, Fleurus and the sieges of Soissons and Gorkum. For Dennewitz, Winning received the Iron Cross II. Class and for Ligny the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class.

After the war, on March 8, 1816, he came to the tribe of the 1st Potsdam Landwehr Regiment and from there on March 20, 1820 to the 2nd Battalion of the 8th Landwehr Regiment. He was promoted to major on March 30, 1829 with a patent from March 31, 1829 and on April 30, 1830 aggregated to the 2nd Dragoon Regiment . On September 8, 1833 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class. He received his promotion to lieutenant colonel on 30 March 1840 and the colonel on 22 March 1845. The following year he was on 19 May 1846 Pension adopted. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of service, Winning was given the character of major general. He died on October 17, 1849 in Schwedt / Oder.

He married Adolfine Betty Freiin von Keller (1790-1819) in Rathenow on September 29, 1814. The daughters Adolfine Betty Karoline (1817–1890) and Marie Agnes Adelheid (* 1819), who married August Adolf Eduard Heinrich von Lettow-Vorbeck (1815–1860), Herr auf Drawehn, emerged from the marriage.
