action

Marley, who is beautiful and cheerful, lives and works in New Orleans . She enjoys her life and has so far avoided long-term relationships with men. She works in an advertising agency and was recently promoted.

Since Marley has been feeling increasingly uncomfortable lately, she has herself checked by a doctor, also on the advice of her friends. There she starts flirting with her doctor Julian. During an anesthesia, Whoopi Goldberg appears as god in a dream. After several examinations, she is finally diagnosed with end-stage colon cancer . She shares her diagnosis with her friends over dinner. In the following, however, Marley doesn't seem to take her condition seriously. She starts chemotherapy anyway .

One evening she happened to meet her doctor Julian in a jazz bar and was able to persuade him to go out for a drink with her. At first he refuses because he doesn't want to go out with a patient, but eventually agrees.

In the advertising agency, Marley has so far kept her actual illness a secret and pretends to be suffering from a virus infection. After the chemotherapy did not bring the hoped-for success, she told her supervisor about her cancer. After the latter reports to her that a high payment can be expected from the company life insurance in such a case, she goes shopping with her friends.

After receiving further treatment in the hospital, Julian asks her to accompany him to a fundraising gala. At the donation gala, Julian learns from the attending physician that Marley has broken off her therapy. While walking together, Marley talks to Julian about her fears, then the two kiss and spend the night together. Marley eventually tells him that she dropped out of therapy because she wanted to enjoy the rest of her life. Marley and Julian become a couple and spend a lot of time together.

Over time, Marley becomes increasingly dissatisfied with her situation and increasingly dismissive of Julian. When Marley rides a bike while drunk, she narrowly escapes a serious accident and only falls over a church sign. In her dream, Whoopi Goldberg appears again in heaven. Marley tells Whoopi that she is afraid of dying and that she can no longer do all the things she wanted to do in life - buy a house, become a mother and find a man who loves her. Whoopi then says that she has already found at least one man who loves her.

Marley drives to Julian to confess her love for him. The two make up again. When Marley gets worse and worse, they all come to see her friends by her bed. She starts planning her own funeral. Over time, Marley begins to understand that the situation is very difficult not only for her, but also for her friends. She visits her friends and apologizes for her behavior so far.

One day Marley passed out in the park and was taken to the hospital. Julian makes it to the hospital just in time to confess his love to her again. She eventually dies in his arms in the hospital. Marley's friends end up having a happy retirement party for Marley, just like she wished.

criticism

"Schmonzette, who presses on the lacrimal gland through the combination of love and premature death, even though the film comes up with a refreshingly strong, completely unmoving heroine."

"Physical infirmity? Nothing. Dealing with illness and death? Only as long as it feels good and serves to edify the audience. "

- World Online

"In order to keep the audience happy, Kassell downplayed the symptoms of the disease: Marley's weight loss is claimed but cannot be seen, and despite chemotherapy, she does not know any fatigue."

- RP Online

"Because of the unbelievable actors, the overly cheesy and exaggerated dialogues and the outrageous plot, only a few women will have their joy with" No means against love "."

- Kulthit.de

“Have handkerchiefs ready. The film relies on the great emotions that the cinema has in store and that can put pressure on the lacrimal gland of one or the other viewer. So, look at it and cry with you - because it's so beautiful. "

- Kino-zeit.de

With Metacritic, the film achieved a Metascore of 14%. 4% of the film reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes are positive (as of September 2012).
