The marshy headwaters of Kelster, view from Kleinwiesenhart swathe of

The headwaters of Kelster is situated in Frankfurt district Schwanheim on the edge of the Frankfurt green belt belonging Schwanheimer meadows . From there, the brook runs for a distance of around 1.6 kilometers in a west and south-westerly direction in the Frankfurt city area. The headwaters are located in the far west of the Frankfurt city forest , east of the swampy raw lake . This marshland is located on the northern and western edge of part of the Schwanheimer meadows with the field name Kleine Wiese . The stream there consists of a system of ditches that only temporarily carry water, which serve to drain the meadows. Due to the swampy character of the area, which also partly dries up due to the season, the source of the Kelster cannot be precisely located. The Kelster flows west of the Kleinwiesenschauise along the eastern edge of the Rohsee. The Kelster is one of three rivers in the Frankfurt city forest , next to the Königsbach, which is further east and also flows into the Main from the left, and the stream vom Mörderbrunnen, which flows into the Königsbach from the right.

After crossing under federal highway 40 in a westerly direction, the Kelster reaches the Kelsterbach district. It flows through the wetland of the Riedwiese, runs a short distance parallel to the Amselpfad, and finally flows into the Main on the northern outskirts of Kelsterbach.
