Kevin Devine (born December 19, 1979 - not clearly verifiable - in New York , NY ) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Accompanying his singing he plays acoustic or electric guitar , but sometimes also bass and glockenspiel . When Devine is not completely solo, he is accompanied by The Goddamn Band , which consists partly of former members of his ex-band Miracle of '86 .

style

Its style varies between indie rock , folk rock and American acoustic folk; He also has a sympathy for the genres of alternative rock , grunge and lo-fi from 90s bands such as Concrete Blonde , Pavement , Nirvana and Pedro the Lion , of which he has covered several songs at concerts, as well as on EPs and as B- Pages played. Other such recorded influences from the acoustic area are u. a. Phil Ochs , Bob Dylan , Neil Young , Neutral Milk Hotel and Elliott Smith . After touring together with Brand New and the Manchester Orchestra , he is also brought closer musically to them; furthermore supported Jesse Lacey (Brand New) him vocally at pieces of his third album.

Career

In his early teens, Brooklyn- born Devine played in a local band known locally in the Staten Island hardcore scene called Delusion . He was later the lead singer and guitarist for the band Miracle of '86 ; Both bands were broadly divided into the genres of indie rock , alternative rock , post-hardcore and post-punk . After graduating from Fordham University in New York with a major in journalism in 2001, he devoted himself more intensively to his musical career, but did not turn completely away from Miracle of '86 by the time he was making his third solo album . He saw the band as a "kind of screamy rock thing" , a characterization that was too different from the "folkie songs" that he had in mind in the future. With his fourth album, he released the first on a major label in 2006 . A few months after the release, however, as a result of the merger of Capitol Records with Virgin Records, he lost his major contract and had to return to the well-known indie label for the time being .

On Scott Matthew's 2009 album , Devine contributed to singing and playing guitar.
