The Mae Nam Khwae Noi ( Thai : แม่น้ำ แคว น้อย ), or just Khwae Noi, is a tributary of the Mae Nam Nan in northern Thailand .

Another Thai river has the same name , but it is located in the west of central Thailand in Kanchanaburi Province near the border with Myanmar .

etymology

Mae Nam is the Thai word for 'river' and comes before every Thai river name. The first element of the name Khwae (Thai: แคว ) means 'tributary', the second Noi (Thai: น้อย ) means 'small'. So the literal translation of Mae Nam Khwae Noi means "small tributary".

geography

The source of the Khwae Noi lies in the mountains of the district ( Amphoe ) Chat Trakan in the province Phitsanulok , within the national park Nam Tok Chat Trakan . From here it flows through the agricultural district of Chat Trakan and further through the districts of Wat Bot , Wang Thong and Phrom Phiram . Finally, the Khwae Noi flows into the Mae Nam Nan in the Chom Thong municipality ( tambon ) in the Mueang Phitsanulok district .

The Khwae Noi is thus part of the Chao Phraya river system , which finally flows into the Gulf of Thailand south of the state capital Bangkok .

history

The Mae Nam Khwae Noi was historically the main route of transport and therefore very important for the residents of the Phitsanulok Province and the surrounding provinces. The Khwae Noi River, along with the larger Nan River, brought prosperity and growth to Phitsanulok as a means of communication. Life along the banks of these two rivers greatly influenced the culture of the common people of this region.

Tributaries

Tributaries of the Khwae Noi are the Mae Nam Om Sing and the Mae Nam Fua.

Khwae Noi Dam Project

Due to the changes in the climate in recent years, there was frequent flooding along the Khwae Noi during the rainy season, which led to a decrease in the quality of the arable land. The increased drainage of water into the Nan River caused destruction there too. During the dry season, however, there are often periods of drought because the level of the Khwae Noi is too low. At the initiative of the king, a dam was built in the Wat Bot district to alleviate these problems. The dam was completed in 2009.
