King Prawn is an English crossover band from London , which was formed in 1993, disbanded in 2003 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was formed in 1993 and consisted of singer Al-Farabi Rumjen, bassist Babar Luck, guitarist Roger "Devil" Hands and drummer Nick "Swindonboye" "Slugboy" Smith. After their first appearance at The Garage in north London, the band reached a recording deal with Words of Warning Records . At the end of 1995 a first single was released with Poison in the Air . In the same year, the debut album First Offence , which had been produced by Martin Ivor Kent of Skunk Anansie , was released. Since the album was quite successful, the group was able to gain some fans not only in London but across the UK . After the release, appearances followed along with Citizen Fish , Snuff , Agnostic Front and Madness . In early 1997, the single Depths of My Soul was released , which was shortly followed by Not Your Punk . In January 1998, after a year of creation, the album Fried was released in London . Did he produce it through his work with Therapy? famous Harvey Birrell. In other concerts, the band recommended itself to a larger audience. With the Kerrang! Awards 1998 the band was also nominated in the category "Best New British Band". Outside of their home country, the album was only released at the end of July 1998. On the occasion of this expansion of the reach, a video clip for Dephts of My Soul was shot for broadcast on MTV . The following year, an EP was released with Your Worst Enemy , which was followed in 2000 by the single Day in Day Out . The album Surrender to tbe Blender was recorded in August 1999 and was released in 2000. In the same year, a single was released with Someone to Hate , which contains a total of three songs. At the end of 2001, the album Got the Thirst was recorded within four weeks before they went on tour through Italy and Germany in the summer of 2002 . In 2003 Got the Thirst was released. The band held their last appearance for the time being on December 20, 2003 in London. The concert was released on DVD . The reason for the breakup was on the one hand that the band members were no longer willing to tour, on the other hand Roger Hands had found another job. The band has been active again since 2013. In the same year the group appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals and the Boomtown Festival . In November of that year, the band released the two new songs Done Days and A Solemn Man via Bandcamp . In 2015 and 2017 the band played again at the Boomtown Festival.

style

According to Mario Mesquita Borges from Allmusic , the band mixes ska , punk and hardcore punk , so that an alternative form of rock 'n' roll is created from it. Christian Graf stated in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon that the band mixes punk, ska, reggae, hip-hop , metal and jazz . The same genres were mentioned by Joel McIver in his book The Next Generation of Rock & Punk Nu-Metal . In an interview with derdude-goes-ska.de , the band stated that in addition to punk and hip-hop, they were also influenced by dub and jungle . Alex Henderson, also from Allmusic , stated in his review of Got the Thirst that King Prawn was one of the most exciting ska-punk bands to have spawned the 1990s. The album is now a solid continuation and influences from bands like The Specials , the Dead Kennedys , The Clash , Rage Against the Machine , Public Enemy and Shabba Ranks are still audible. In their songs, the band take ska-punk as a basis and enrich it with hardcore punk, alternative metal , hip-hop, funk, soul and dancehall .

The “varied mix of Oi! "Punk & Ragga-Ska" results in a "multicultural core" that is danceable and enjoyable, said Hanno Kress in her first- off meeting for Rock Hard . He got close to Dub War and Blagger's ITA . The lyrics are anarchist . Simon Brunner from ox-Fanzine wrote in his review of First Offence that King Prawn is a crossover band that combines hardcore, ska-punk, ragga , dub as well as some funk and hip-hop. This would evoke comparisons to Dub War, Fishbone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Rage Against the Machine and, because of the singing, also to Blue Meanies , Dead Kennedys and System of a Down . In the same issue, Brunner also reviewed Fried in London and found that this publication is no longer quite as diverse. You orientate yourself exclusively in the direction of punk, hardcore punk, a little metal and above all reggae, ragga, ska and dub, so that it sounds a little more like Bad Brains and Dub War, just "modern and boldly produced". The genres would change quickly in the songs, but they would remain catchy. The two bonus songs from this re-release would be reminiscent of Blue Meanies. In a later edition, Brunner reviewed Got the Thirst , noting that the hip-hop content made the songs sound old-fashioned. The songs are very varied, but the hip-hop with hard guitars in the style of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine predominate, but the wind instruments give the songs their own character.
