The Jeddah Tower , formerly known as the Kingdom Tower , is a construction project in the north of Jeddah , on the west coast of Saudi Arabia . At the time of completion, the skyscraper will be the tallest structure in the world at an estimated 1007 meters. In January 2018, work on the skyscraper was stopped at a previously achieved height of 256 m; it is planned to resume in 2020.

The project is commissioned by the Kingdom Holding Company , 94% owned by billionaire Prince al-Walid ibn Talal . The architect is Adrian Smith , who also designed the Burj Khalifa . The project is to be implemented by the British company Hyder Consulting in cooperation with Arup . The cost is estimated at $ 1.2 billion. The tower will be the centerpiece of the first construction phase of the USD 20 billion building project Jeddah Economic City . The highest viewing platform in the world is to be located at a height of 652 meters .

The city will stretch along the Red Sea on the northern side of Jeddah.

The building

The spiral-shaped, needle-like skyscraper was originally intended to be up to 1,600 meters high and was therefore also called the Mile High Tower . Due to the nature of the ground, the planned height had to be reduced to 1007 meters, although the final height has not yet been communicated (as of 2013). This makes it higher than the 828 meter high Burj Khalifa in Dubai , currently the tallest building in the world . The Jeddah Tower is to house offices, living space and a hotel on 500,000 square meters.

implementation

At first the construction seemed improbable. The project was approved at the end of March 2011 and commissioned at the beginning of August 2011. The contractor is the Bin Ladin Group .

The structure was founded on 270 piles , which reach between 45 and 110 meters in depth and should have a diameter of 1.5 to 1.8 meters. The preparatory work for this began in December 2012, the foundation work actually began in January 2013. At the end of July 2016, 45 floors had already been completed; as of the beginning of February 2018, 63 floors had been completed. The foundation piles were made by a Saudi Arabian subsidiary of the Upper Bavarian construction company Bauer AG .

The lift systems are supplied by the Finnish manufacturer Kone .

Completion was originally planned for 2018, but has been postponed by several years.
