Kirchbrombach , also Kirch-Brombach , is the largest district with over 1600 inhabitants and at the same time the seat of the municipality of Brombachtal in the Odenwald district in southern Hesse .

Geographical location

Kirchbrombach is located on the gentle slopes of the Dorfbach , which, coming from the west, passes the local situation underground and flows into the Brombach at Langenbrombach . To the north of the village lies the deeply cut valley of the Balsbach with a group of homesteads of the same name and behind it the 339 meter high wooded Kirchberg . To the east of the hamlet of Balsbach (225 meters), the Herrenwäldchen settlement extends up the slope. The district consists mainly of agricultural land. Larger forest areas can only be found in the headwaters of the Balsbach and on the Kirchberg .

history

The existence of the place is documented under the name Branbach since 1324. On a flat mountain spur in the center of the village stood in the 13th / 14th. In the 17th century, the Kirchbrombach Castle . It formed the center of the Brombacher Zent belonging to the Breuberg lordship . In their place the church was built, which subsequently became part of the name of the place. Only remnants of the castle have been preserved in the curtain wall around the church. To the vast parish of the parish belonged to Wall Bach , Kilsbach , Affhöllerbach , Birkert , Böllstein , Hembach , sub-Gersprenz, upper Gersprenz, Ober-Kainsbach , Ober-Kinzig , Nieder-Kinzig , middle-Kinzig , Stiersbach , Holler Bach , Langenbrombach (half ), the hamlet of Balsbach, Gumpersberg and the deserted castle Schnellert .

On October 1, 1971, the municipality of Kirch-Brombach (official spelling) voluntarily merged with four neighboring municipalities to form the municipality of Brombachtal on the occasion of the regional reform in Hesse . The new municipality made the place the administrative seat and, unlike in the more distant parts of the village, waived the establishment of a local district and a local council .

Culture

The entire church hill complex with the late Gothic Protestant parish church from the mid-15th century, the rectory and the parish hall is under monument protection, as are a number of houses in Hauptstrasse and Höhenstrasse and, last but not least, the former schoolhouse in Schulstrasse .

Personalities

Evangelical parish church

Before the Reformation, the church belonged to the Canon Monastery of St. Alban near Mainz . The rectangular choir with diamond-shaped reticulated vaults and the square west tower date from the time it was built. The nave was renewed after a fire in 1714–15; The hood on the tower also dates from the Baroque period.

Inside, after restorations in 1923 and 1961/62, remains of frescoes on the choir walls (Last Judgment, St. Martin, Crucifixion) were uncovered; the conservation status is rudimentary. The ornamentation on the choir windows and the frescoes in the choir vault date from a later period.

The most valuable piece of equipment is a winged altar from the early 16th century. The wooden sculptures in the middle part depict Saint Alban of Mainz , flanked by two bishops; the side wings are painted with scenes from the life and suffering of the former patron. From a stylistic point of view, the characters, who are strongly moved in expression and habit, are associated with the master of the Babenhausen altar and with the circle of Matthias Grünewald .

In the churchyard there is a large linden tree from 1883; This is where the main court was located in the Middle Ages .
