Klaus Raddatz (prehistoric)

Klaus Ernst Hellmut Raddatz (born November 19, 1914 in Konitz in West Prussia ; † December 24, 2002 ) was a German prehistoric scientist . He is considered the "discoverer" of the band ceramics in the Uckermark , where he grew up.

Career

Klaus Raddatz spent his youth in Prenzlau in the Uckermark, since his birthplace Konitz was ceded to Poland in 1920 according to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty establishing the Polish Corridor . He attended high school in Prenzlau and Pasewalk . As a schoolboy he was interested in prehistoric monuments and finds in his new home and was acquainted with Joachim Otto von der Hagen (1860–1942), the curator of the Uckermärkisches Museum at the time . Raddatz published his first find reports at the age of 19. He trained as a technical draftsman and after his military service (1936–1938) began studying prehistory in Kiel. At the beginning of the Second World War , he broke off his studies because he was called up for military service. In the post-war period he was a dock worker in Bremen and later continued his studies in Kiel . He took part in excavations on Sylt and in Haithabu . In 1955 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the " Thorsberger Moorfund ". He then worked at the German Archaeological Institute in Madrid and at the Archaeological Institute Schloss Gottorf . In 1967, he was for a work on Spanish silver finds habilitation and accepted a position at the University of Hannover , where he held the function of a professor and Scientific Council.

In 1974 Klaus Raddatz received the chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Göttingen and headed the seminar for Prehistory and Protohistory there until his retirement . In 1970 he was a founding member of the Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony .

In his scientific work, Klaus Raddatz dealt with topics from the Roman Empire in Central, Northern and Eastern Europe as well as the prehistory and early history of Italy and the Iberian Peninsula . He remained scientifically active until his death in 2002.
