Klaus Schöffling

After graduating from the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Bad Vilbel , Klaus Schöffling (* 1954 in Frankfurt) did an apprenticeship at the Frankfurt Suhrkamp Verlag . He then worked from 1978 to 1982 in the publisher's editing department . Along with Egon Ammann and Karlheinz Braun, he was one of the employees who later founded their own publishing houses. Schöffling was considered an expert on German exile literature . In 1987 he founded the “ Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt ” with his wife Ida Schöffling (* 1947) and added well-known authors to the program: Eva Demski , Reinhard Kaiser , Burkhard Spinnen , Ror Wolf and Sylvia Plath . In 1992 Schöffling was pushed out of the publishing house by a financier because of impending losses. The authors in solidarity with him encouraged him to found a new publishing house.

Klaus Schöffling is a member of the writers' association PEN Center Germany and chairman of the Frankfurt association reads a book . In 2016, Schöffling was named Publisher of the Year by Buchmarkt magazine .

Schöffling & Co.

In November 1993 Klaus and Ida Schöffling entered Schöffling & Co. Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH in the commercial register, with the Frankfurt author Eva Demski , who was a co-partner until 2004 , behind the "Co."

Since the publishing house was founded, authors of contemporary German literature have been the focus of the program. These include poems and novels by Mirko Bonné and stories by Franziska Gerstenberg as well as Silke Scheuermann's poetry and prose. With Burkhard Spinnen , the publisher has an author under contract who writes stories and novels - for children and young people as well as adults - as well as essays and feature sections. Numerous essays, stories and novels by Eva Demski , Klaus Modick and Jochen Schimmang have also appeared there.

In addition to the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize winner Inka Parei , the publishing house also represents young authors such as Ulrike Almut Sandig , Nadja Küchenmeister , Anna-Elisabeth Mayer and Sascha Reh. New editions of novels were edited by Paul Kornfeld ( Blanche or the studio in the garden ) and Martin Kessel ( Mr. Brecher's fiasco ). Another focus of the publishing house are memoirs and recollections in the field of Holocaust literature such as Ana Novac ( The beautiful days of my youth ), Helene Holzman ( This child should live ) and the stories by Tadeusz Borowski ( Here in Auschwitz in a new translation). At the end of 2018, the rights to the volumes of Peter Kurzck's bequest went to the publisher.

Editions of works by Elizabeth Bowen , Helga M. Novak and Ror Wolf are an important part of the author maintenance at Schöffling & Co.

The literary cat calendar , which has been published since 1996, has also become known , especially since a review by Elke Heidenreich on her television program Read! in 2003.

The “ambitious overall concept” received major publishing house awards in 2017 and again in 2019.
