Klaus Zoephel

Klaus Zoephel (born July 16, 1929 in Plauen , Vogtland ; † January 27, 2017 in Ingolstadt , Donau ) was a German composer and conductor .

Life

At a young age, during the Second World War , Klaus Zoephel worked as an organist in various places in his Vogtland homeland.

After graduating from high school, he studied music from 1948 to 1953 in the subjects of conducting (with Hermann Egon Bölsche ), composition ( Johannes Weyrauch and Wilhelm Weismann ) and piano (Franz Langer) at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig . Before completing his studies in 1953, he was entrusted with the development and management of the newly founded state cultural orchestra of the Senftenberg miners' group .

He then worked for a few years as a theater conductor (at the German National Theater Weimar, among others ) and later as the chief musical director of the Mühlhausen State Cultural Orchestra in Thuringia. From 1963 onwards he worked for almost three decades as chief conductor of the Pirna State Orchestra near Dresden ( symphony orchestra ). In 1970 he was appointed music director.

From 1965 to 1996 he also taught music theory, conducting and score playing at the "Carl Maria von Weber" Academy of Music in Dresden . His students included Hans-Joachim Rotzsch , Udo Zimmermann , Wilfried Krätzschmar , Romely Pfund, Hans-Peter Kirchberg , Johannes Winkler, Christian Kluttig , Volker Hahn and Jörg Herchet. Concert tours and radio recordings have taken him to numerous orchestras at home and abroad. He also achieved international success as a composer of orchestral and chamber music works. He has received several prizes and awards for his compositional work.

Since 1995 he has lived as a freelance composer in Ingolstadt / Donau. He held various honorary positions and was President of the Joseph Haas Society since 1997. On a voluntary basis, he supervised the senior choir at the Cathedral of the Beautiful of Our Lady (Ingolstadt).

Klaus Zoephel was married to the opera singer and musicologist Anneliese Zänsler .
