Klein Maria Dreieichen is a pilgrimage chapel dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother of God near Groß in Lower Austria . The main festivals of the chapel, which is cared for by Altenburg Abbey , are celebrated on the occasion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary and Ascension Day.

history

The pilgrimage church of Klein Maria Dreieichen goes back to a portrait of the Virgin that was affixed between 1784 and 1800 on a path used by pilgrims on their way to Mariazell or Maria Dreieichen . This picture was attached to an oak tree with three trunks. In 1819 it was replaced by Wenzel Jellinek, the district forester of Groß, with a copy of the miraculous image of Maria Dreieichen.

Various miraculous answers to prayer turned the previous stopover from pilgrimages into a dedicated pilgrimage destination.

On April 16, 1827 a new image of the Virgin Mary was consecrated by Pastor Johann Hoys from Groß. The donor was the forester Jellinek - whether identical to Wenzel Jellinek is not clear - whose daughter had been cured of a life-threatening disease. Since then, the number of processions and pilgrimages has increased steadily. In 1830 a wooden statue of the Virgin was attached to the image of the Virgin Mary.

On July 15, 1866 , there was a fire, possibly caused by Prussian soldiers in camp, which destroyed the numerous votive offerings . Only the main trunk of the oak with the miraculous image remained intact. Parts of the other two tribes could be saved.

On the initiative of Leopold Besauer, the pastor of Groß, a chapel was finally built. Count Erwin Schönborn-Buchheim as the landlord made the building site available. Zogelsdorfer stone was used as the building material for the chapel, the foundation stone of which was laid on August 15, 1868 . The building was built by the master builder Johann Gassalek, who lives in Sitzendorf an der Schmida . Lack of money and the transfer of Pastor Besauer to Hollabrunn brought the project to a standstill, but in 1869 the chapel was still completed. In 1870 the interior furnishings could be purchased, with the altar being erected over the rootstock of the three oak trunks. The inauguration of the chapel took place on August 28, 1870. On this day, the present image of grace from the parish church of Groß was transferred here. Donations made it possible to erect a small roof turret in 1887 . The tower cross was consecrated on July 3rd of that year.

In 1875 the pilgrimage chapel was granted a mass license and the first Holy Mass was celebrated on September 25th of the same year.

The wooden statue was destroyed in a fire in 1908 that broke out around the altar. The image of grace was preserved.

Building at the pilgrimage chapel Klein Maria Dreieichen

In 1913 an enlargement of the chapel was considered. At first there were various problems, then the First World War and finally the economic difficulties that followed the war that caused the project to fail. The sacristy , which was built in 1931 and consecrated on October 4th, made it possible for believers to hear confessions here too .

In the course of time, various stalls for the sale of devotional objects , souvenirs, food and drinks were built in the vicinity of the pilgrimage chapel Klein Maria Dreieichen .

Cardinal Friedrich Gustav Piffl , who was a guest here on May 9, 1923, is one of the most prominent visitors to the Klein-Maria-Dreieichen pilgrimage chapel .

Miraculous image

Due to fires and weathering, the image of grace had to be changed several times.

The current miraculous image is a carved wooden Pietà. This was originally located in the parish church of Groß, which was devastated by the Swedes together with the place in 1640. The undamaged Pietà was found during the clean-up work and put up again in the new parish church. On August 28, 1870, it was transferred to the Klein Maria Dreieichen pilgrimage chapel. The late Gothic Pietà is currently kept in the Hollabrunn Museum.

Brunnen and Bründl

A well dug in 1829 near the pilgrimage chapel to supply the pilgrims with water dried up a few years later, so that it was later filled in again. To solve this supply problem, a new well should be built. However, this was prevented by the outbreak of the First World War and only started again in 1927. Karl Beichl found a nearby water vein. However, because of its depth, the construction of the well was too expensive.

In 1930 the dilapidated Kalkhauser-Bründl was repaired, rebuilt like a grotto and decorated with a Lourdes statue .
