Little man - now what? is a 1933 after the eponymous novel by Hans Fallada turned German feature film by Fritz Wendhausen . The main roles are played by Hermann Thimig and Hertha Thiele as Hans and Lämmchen.

action

The young accountant Hans Pinneberg lives in the provinces with his wife, which he affectionately calls "Lammchen". He has to keep his marriage to the beautiful young Emma a secret because his boss plans to marry him off to his daughter. When the truth comes out, Hans is released. Now Hans' stepmother has to help in Berlin. She and her seedy lover try to support the young couple by providing Hans and his wife with an apartment in their house. But Hans ends up in prison. When he is released, it dawns on him that his stepmother runs a brothel. Hans and Lammchen leave their apartment to stay with a street vendor they are friends with. This time around there seems to be cause for cautious optimism.

background

Fallada's novel Little Man - What Now? , which served as a template for the film, was one of the best-selling novels in 1932, which is why the film industry also expressed interest in a film adaptation. Initially, a more socially critical version was discussed with Erich Engel as the director. Bertolt Brecht , who is known as Engel , brought Kurt Weill into conversation for the film music. In a letter to the music publisher Universal Edition , Kurt Weill reported that he could design the music for the planned film based on his own ideas. Erich Engel and Hans Fallada did not agree on the draft of the script, which is why work was discontinued. Finally, RN-Filmproduktion GmbH took over the production of the film. Even with the new authors, Hans Fallada could not agree on the script. This time, Fallada withdrew from the film project, and it was completed without him.

The shooting took place in Swinoujscie under the production and recording management of Adolf Essek. The buildings are by Willy Schiller and Otto Gülstorff , the costumes by Wilhelm Scholz.

The film was only with considerable cuts on 7 July 1933 by the Board of Film released for execution. All scenes in which the members of the Comedian Harmonists could be seen fell victim to the censorship. The vocal ensemble also sang the title song Little Man, what now? , which had previously been recorded on May 11, 1933.

The premiere of the film took place on August 3, 1933 in the Berlin Capitol .

reception

In the Film-Kurier of September 29, 1932, Fallada said he was “happy” about the filming of his novel, but indicated that the script had little to do with his novel. After all, film writers would “approach the subject differently”.

The music and media scientist Dr. Wolfgang Rumpf saw the film as an example of media partnerships. With the introduction of the sound film , there was cooperation between the record industry and the film industry in the marketing of the products.

Just one year after the premiere of Little Man - what now? Universal Pictures are releasing the film "Little Man - what now?" with Margaret Sullavan and Douglass Montgomery in the leading roles. The screenplay by William Anthony McGuire is based more on the German film than on the novel by Hans Fallada.

Peter Zadek staged the material as a revue that premiered on September 22, 1972 in the Schauspielhaus Bochum . The music for the revue Little Man, what now? wrote Erwin Bootz , who had already starred in the film as a member of the Comedian Harmonists.
