The Konrad-Zuse-Museum Hünfeld with town and district history , as it is called by its full name, is a museum in Hünfeld . It has two main themes: On the one hand, it is dedicated to the history and natural space of the former Hünfeld district and the history of the city of Hünfeld . On the other hand, it is dedicated to the work of Konrad Zuse , the inventor of the world's first functional computer. He lived and worked most of his life in Hünfeld. The museum is financed by a foundation and run and operated on a voluntary basis.

history

In 1910 a local history and history association was founded in Hünfeld, on whose initiative the museum was created. In 1912 the first exhibition of collected and purchased exhibits took place in the rooms of the district and city savings bank. In 1919 the association was entered in the association register. In 1920 the museum had about 800 exhibits. In 1924 the exhibits had to be stored in poorly equipped rooms at the agricultural school. Two years later, the association bought a house at Hainstrasse 4 for 5200 Reichsmarks. In the late 1930s, the association's life almost came to a standstill, until in 1940 they considered selling the house and dissolving the association. The house was sold, but the association remained. After the Second World War , there were considerations to dissolve the Huenfeld Museum Association. Many exhibits had been destroyed or were lost. The remaining exhibits were to be handed over to Fulda , to the Vonderau Museum .

Citizens' protests prevented the association and the museum from being dissolved. In 1969, the financing of the museum was finally organized by the city and district town. The city made the premises of the former elementary school at Kirchplatz 6 available. From March 12, 1977 the museum was reopened. Rural and middle-class living, artisanal and early historical exhibits were presented. In the 1980s it was planned to create a cultural center with the museum as its center. Due to the fall of the Berlin Wall , the planned financial support from the State of Hesse did not materialize and the project could not be implemented. From then on, however, the museum's premises were constantly being expanded. Until 1993, various departments were worked on under the leadership of the head of the Huenfeld Culture and Museum Society and his employees. The enlarged museum was opened in August 2007. In 2007, the company was converted into the Hünfeld City and District History Museum Foundation with the Konrad Zuse Museum, which ensured a high level of financial independence . The museum costs are covered from their income and volunteer work is secured. At the same time as the conversion, the name was also changed to "Konrad-Zuse-Museum with town and district history".

Premises

View into the open roof structure of the connected houses

When the museum building at Kirchplatz 6 was renovated in the 1990s, the aim was to expand the exhibition space by including the basement and attic. During the Hessentag in Hünfeld in June 2000, the entire newly designed city and district history museum was presented to the public. At that time, the city also acquired the adjacent building, Kirchplatz 8, to expand the museum. The ground floor serves as an exhibition area, the upper and attic floors serve as work and storage rooms. The building of the Votis Software Museum Foundation at Fuldaer Berg 32 was also integrated into the building. The collections are now housed in four interconnected buildings. The term “Museum Island” was formed through the connection of the four houses over bridges. There are also the branch offices “Keltenhof Mackenzell” with a replica of a Keltenhof and the “Railway Museum” in the former water tower at the train station.

The visitor is welcomed by the "Zuse punched tape path" in front of the museum. With his first computers, Zuse encrypted the command sequence by punching a normal cinema film. Such a film is modeled here through the lights embedded in the floor. An information board provides information about the changing representations.

Departments

In 1996 the company's articles of association were changed to the effect that the individual areas were given more independence.

history

Insight into the section "Prehistory and Early History"

In the section “Prehistory and Early History”, the settlement history of the Hünelder Land is presented. Various finds give insights into life, everyday life, technology and the cult of the dead . The reconstruction of the girl from Molzbach , whose grave was found in the immediate vicinity, is worth mentioning here . A Paleolithic camp was recreated as a life picture. The nationwide most comprehensive overview of "Großenbacher rubble devices ", as well as core axes and polished Wartberg axes are exhibited here.

The section “Origin of the District” provides information on the city's history. The deed of donation from 781 and the town charter from 1310 can be seen as facsimiles . In addition to ceramics from the 15th to 20th centuries, it is worth mentioning the single-shot saloon shotgun, which was used by cyclists at the time, as it could be carried safely with them when loaded.

Johann Adam Förster is one of the most famous political personalities in the Huenfeld region. A section shows the most important stages in his life.

During the German War , on July 4, 1866, a battle between Bavarian and Prussian troops took place on Quecksmoor near Hünfeld . The exhibition “The Battle of Hünfeld” tries to fit this battle into the historical process. The focus is on the tomb of the Bavarian lieutenant of the cuirassiers Franz von Grafenstein, who died after the battle in the hospital of Hünfeld.

On the morning of October 29, 1888, a devastating fire raged in Hünfeld. The “The Great Fire” section uses a city map to give an impression of the extent to which around 250 buildings were destroyed. A reconstruction of the building structure and antique fire engines clearly explain the causes. Incidentally, the fire triggered a nationwide willingness to help, with Kaiser Wilhelm II at the helm. Within a month they raised about 150,000 marks.

The “Jewish population in a district” collection consists mainly of texts, images and documents. It is divided into two subject areas, "Jewish life from its beginnings to 1933" and "From exclusion and disenfranchisement to physical extermination 1933–1945".

In June 1940 French prisoners of war arrived in Hünfeld to be used for work. After the war ended, the prisoners returned to their homeland. From 1962 onwards, the “alumni” made regular visits to Hünfeld, whose children carried on the friendship. The section “The French Prisoners of War” shows a documentation of the history and friendship between the former enemies. Incidentally, there is a memorial stone on the old cemetery in Hünfeld for the French soldiers who died during captivity in Hünfeld.

The Hünfelder Städtepartner- and sponsorships another room is dedicated.

On April 2, 1945, American war vehicles drove to the town hall square in Huenfeld. After the founding of the GDR in 1949, Americans in particular took over the protection of the inner-German border , on which Hünfeld was almost immediately. Only after reunification did the US government withdraw its troops from the region. Newspaper articles, pictures and souvenir objects document the presence of the Americans in Hünfeld and their relationship to the Hünfeld population.

Hünfeld was close to the zone boundary . Therefore, the museum had a department on this topic early on. This department was expanded significantly in 2009. The former Federal Border Guard Department in Hünfeld-Mitte made exhibits and documents from their “border information room” available to the museum.

Technology history

Historic radio receivers

Flax was grown around Hünfeld until the middle of the 20th century . In the section “From flax cultivation to the textile industry ”, the processing of flax straw into linen can be traced using the tools on display.

In the “Fire and Light” department, the development of artificial lighting can be followed in a circle. From pine wood to electric street lighting. The heart of this department is the original Francis shaft turbine .

The development of the radio is based, among other things, on preliminary scientific work carried out by two Fulda citizens: Ferdinand Schneider and Nobel Prize winner Ferdinand Braun . The "History of Radio " section shows first-generation radio sets.

For the exhibition "Wella Location Hünfeld" the company Wella provided to the museum exhibits are available. They come from their previous production and from their own museum holdings at the Wellamuseum Darmstadt .

Nature and hunting

The hunting club took over the sponsorship of this department, which was opened on November 2nd, 1985. In 1991 the Rhön was recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO across all countries . The nature around Hünfeld is part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . The exhibition shows a cross-section of the local fauna as well as old hunting weapons.

Artistic departments

With the establishment of the Fulda monastery by Bonifatius in 744, the Christianization of the region began. The "sacred space" was built in cooperation with the Hessian Museum Association. Religious works of art from different epochs are shown here.

In the “Bourgeois Living” section, pieces of furniture from three centuries are on display. The bedroom on display from around 1900 was in use in a town house in Hünfeld until 2005.

A permanent exhibition has been dedicated to the work of the Hünfeld painter Ernst Bräuning since July 2005. In addition, the work of other contemporary, resident artists will be presented.

Emergence

A separate section is dedicated to the life and work of Konrad Zuse , who lived in Hünfeld from 1957 until his death in 1995. The museum offers an overview of the scientific inventions, the artistic work and the personality of Zuse. The department was completed in 1983 for Konrad Zuse's 75th birthday. Until 1993, the department of Zuse computers and large devices had been worked on under the leadership of the head of the Hünfeld cultural and museum society and his employees. In 1996 the Konrad-Zuse-Gesellschaft sponsored this department. On December 18, 1997, on the 2nd anniversary of Konrad Zuse's death, the revised area was ceremoniously opened. In 2006 the exhibition area of the Konrad-Zuse-Museum was doubled to approx. 200 m².

Scientific exhibits

The computers created by Zuse and Zuse KG take up the major part of the museum . For this purpose, historical computers were procured from all over Germany. This begins with a fully functional replica of the Z3 , a computer that used relay technology and was freely programmable. You can also see the calculating machine Z22 from 1958, which was the first to work with tube instead of relay switching. The exhibited, functional Z23 works with cheaper transistors . The further development, the Z25, has already been reduced in size. Technical device for the textile industry, the Graphomat Z67, shows the diverse application possibilities.

Artistic exhibits

The exhibits start with works of art from childhood and adolescence. Some work as commercial artist for the Ford company can be seen. In later years he turned to oil painting, with realistic and abstract motifs.
