Koprzywnica is a city inhistory
Today's Koprzywnica goes back to the establishment of a Cistercian abbey between 1183 and 1185. The place received city rights in 1268. In 1241 and 1259/60 the Tatars destroyed the place. In 1494, 1657 and 1891 large parts of the city were destroyed by fires. During the Second Northern War from 1655 to 1660 the place was destroyed by the Swedes. During the first partition of Poland , the place became part of Austria in 1772. The monastery was closed in 1819, followed by the decline of the town and the loss of town charter in 1864. After the First World War , the town became part of the re-established Poland . During the Second World War , the German occupation authorities established a ghetto here in 1942, and the approximately 1,800 Jews were later murdered in the Treblinka extermination camp . At the end of the war the Red Army marched into the area and as a result the place became part of Poland again. 2001 Koprzywnica received again city rights.
