Statue of St. Helena in the Chapel of the Cross

The Chapel of the Cross is a Roman Catholic chapel and part of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

description

Descending through the St. Helena Chapel you get to the lowest point of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. According to legend, this is where the finding of the cross took place. Faint traces of frescoes from the 12th century have been preserved on the walls, while traces of machining can be seen on the ceiling, suggesting an old quarry. The plaster on the walls is rich in ash, such as was commonly used in the time of Christ to build underground cisterns.

Legend

The legend of the finding of the cross has come down to us in different versions. According to one version, Helena , mother of the Roman emperor Constantine , traveled to the Holy Land , where the cross of Christ was found around the year 325 during excavations on her instructions .
