Krocha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Krocha (high German: cracker ) refers to members of a short-lived, perceived mainly in 2008 youth culture scene in Austria . The term is derived from the Viennese “einkrochn” ( crawling in ) and, according to his own statements, was coined by the Austrian DJ Stefan Berndorfer (Stee Wee Bee). This youth culture does not represent any explicit values or worldviews.

In the vote for the Word of the Year 2008 in Austria, Krocha took second place behind Lebensmensch .

distribution

There were young people who call themselves Krocha from around 2007 to 2009 in Vienna and later occasionally throughout Austria. However, the style of clothing has already expanded far beyond that. Media such as Youtube , Netlog or MyVideo spread the type of dancing and the style of clothing very quickly, with most of the recordings being made with cell phone cameras. At the end of 2008, around 1.7% of 11 to 29 year olds referred to themselves as Krocha.

At the end of 2008 the Krocha scene began to disappear. However, some elements were retained by many young people.

linguistic style

The scene is defined by the use and creation of its own words and the use of its own style of language, which are largely derived from the Viennese colloquial language and parts of the languages of immigrants. So “Kroch 'ma' eine ” ( let's crash into it ) simply stands for having fun or just for entering a disco. The word “fix” is used for emphasis and affirmation. The general expression of the emotional excitement is the word "Bam" (from Na bumm! - Bumsternazl! - Yes something! ). “Pock i ned” ( I don't get a hold of it ) is an expression of bewilderment; the “Oida” ( age ) is placed before or after almost every sentence without any visible connection.

Appearance

Like almost every youth culture, Krocha differ optically from the rest of society through their clothing. They are brand conscious and prefer to wear D&G , De Puta Madre 69 , Angel Devil , Baxmen and Ed Hardy . The outfit usually includes gold- or silver-colored and white sneakers or boxing boots, large trucker and designer caps that are loosely placed on the back of the head, such as those by Ed Hardy or "Flash Caps" in neon colors, tight jeans and sometimes kufiyas .

The common hair style for male Krochan is the mullet . Krocharinnen, as the female members of this group also call themselves, usually have smooth, black-dyed or bleached hair, often with diagonally cut forehead fringes. Skin tinted with self-tanners and a solarium is also typical of Krocha .

music

Krocha listen to electronic dance music, especially Schranz , Hardstyle , Jumpstyle and Dance , whereby the dance style affects the choice of music direction.

marketing

At the beginning of May 2008 the record companies Universal Music and EMI released the samplers krocha traxx Vol. 1 and Krocha Hits Vol. 1 . Both were able to place themselves in the charts, with the latter even taking second place. Universal Music also signed the hip-hop band Die Vamummtn , who rap the Krocha hymn , a parody of the new youth culture. The single was released on May 23, 2008.

Dance style

The dance style of the Krocha cannot be clearly defined, the Krocha themselves describe their dance style as "crawling". On the one hand, it leans heavily on the Melbourne Shuffle and Hardstep , on the other hand, Jumpstyle is also widespread among the Krochan. Some steps are also taken from the Charleston .

reception

In the cultural sections of the Austrian daily newspapers, the stylistic references to the Krocha were mostly rejected:

"Neon, mullet, Pali cloth: why is the worst of the 80s coming back?"

- Oliver Grimm : Die Presse , 2008

“The 'Krocha' are pure fun culture. They focus on self-presentation and consumption. The Palestinian kerchief has no political significance for them at all - it is a pure fashion accessory. That is probably a very short-lived phenomenon - and Vienna is also not the city in which international trends arise. "

- Philipp Ikrath, Head of the Hamburg Department of the Institute for Youth Culture Research in Vienna : Der Standard , 2008

An ideological background is largely denied:

“The ideological superstructure of this movement is still somewhat diffuse. Statements written in the aforementioned Austro-Pidgin on the Internet suggest a solid rejection of the educated bourgeois ethos and a corresponding emphasis on the pleasure principle. "

Trivia

Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer performed a Krocha-style insert for the finale of the 4th season of the ORF dance show Dancing Stars . He also taught his own crocha dance class as part of a morning broadcast on Hitradio Ö3 .
