American Capital of Culture
The title of American Capital of Culture has been awarded since 1999 by the "Organization of the American Capital of Culture", founded in 1997. The model was the title of European Capital of Culture . So far, only Latin American cities have been chosen.
Although the title is actually intended to promote the local cultural scene, there is also criticism of the organization that awards it. The Canadian city of Regina rejected a nomination for the title in 2005 because it found the associated fees and personnel obligations (around 500,000 US dollars in total ) to be too high
