location
The area lies on the northeast edge of the Wachau towards the Tullnerfeld . It goes beyond the Kamptal and extends around the Manhartsberg , the significant border mark between Waldviertel and Weinviertel , to the neighboring Schmidatal .
The park includes the member communities Langenlois and Hadersdorf-Kammern , Schönberg , Gars , Rosenburg-Mold and Altenburg in the Kamptal, Horn , as well as Straß , Maissau , Burgschleinitz-Kühnring in the Straßertal and Eggenburg .
geology
The terrain consists of the southeastern termination of the oldest mountain range in Austria, the granite and gneiss highlands of the fuselage mountains of the Bohemian Massif , and draws the bow to the young deposits of Paratethys that the Alpine-Carpathian foothills and from here to the east, the glacial valley of the Danube forms which broke through the Bohemian granite mass in the Wachau between Waldviertel and Dunkelsteinerwald . It thus illustrates the northern Alpine Molasse Sea created by the unfolding of the Alps and the basic elements of the geological history of Lower Austria .
History of the park
The culture park was developed between 1992 and 1996 by ten municipalities as a tourism project ( Tourismusverband Kulturpark Kamptal in Gars) and opened in 1996. In 2002/2003, it was further developed into a Geopark as part of a LEADER project and the focus on “The Development of the Landscape” was emphasized more strongly. On the occasion of the opening of the Amethyst World in Maissau in 2004, he was recognized by UNESCO as one of the first of the only 25 members in this worldwide network at the time.
