criticism

  • In 1988 it became known that the building contractor Heinz Licht, who had meanwhile gone bankrupt, had paid for the secretary, office supplies and the purchase and four-year operation of the Grill car phone with a total value of DM 100,000 from 1980 to 1987, some of which were accounted for as business costs. The public prosecutor's office in Lüneburg discontinued investigative proceedings on the grounds that the payments served to support the party work, the billing as business costs represented unintentional incorrect postings that were insignificant under tax law and there was no evidence of cooperation in the award of construction contracts between Grill and Licht.
  • In 1990, the local election officer in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district saw election secrecy threatened because Grill had asked party friends on election boards to watch out for a lack of voters close to the CDU in order to be able to telephone after them. The public prosecutor's office declined to investigate.
