Life

After attending elementary and high schools in Leitmeritz and Prague in 1945, the son of a bank employee was called in as a Hitler Youth comrade leader for the Schanz deployment, after the end of the war he was forced to work as a laborer for a Czech farmer.

In 1946 he was relocated to Gaschwitz near Gera and joined the FDJ . In Gera he attended secondary school again and graduated from high school in 1948. In the same year he became a member of the SED and graduated from the Luisenthal district party school . After studying history at the University of Jena in 1948/49, he was initially employed as an instructor for university issues in the FDJ state board of Thuringia. In July 1950 he became head of the universities department of the Central Council (ZR) of the FDJ in Berlin and in January 1952 secretary of the ZR of the FDJ for students. After disputes about the style of struggle of the FDJ against the Christian young communities in the GDR, he was deposed in August 1953 and appointed editor-in-chief of the FDJ student magazine Forum . Turba remained in this position until spring 1963.

In July 1963 Walter Ulbricht appointed Turba head of the youth commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED . Together with Heinz Nahke (Turba's successor as Forum editor-in-chief), Harald Wessel and others, he drafted the youth communique Der Jugend trust and responsibility , which the SED leadership accepted in 1963. In November 1963 he also became a member of the People's Chamber and chairman of its youth committee. After Leonid Brezhnev tried to overthrow Ulbricht in 1965, Turba lost all political offices after the 11th plenum of the SED Central Committee in January 1966 following attacks by the party's hardliners. From 1966 to 1990 he was news editor for the GDR news agency ADN . In 1990 Turba was fully rehabilitated by the PDS leadership at the time .
