Kurt F. Viermetz

Kurt Fridl Viermetz (born April 27, 1939 in Augsburg ; † November 25, 2016 there ) was a German bank manager. As part of the nationalization of Hypo Real Estate Holding AG, investigations were carried out against him and other managers of the bank. However, the investigation was closed.

life and work

Viermetz completed an apprenticeship as a banker after attending the monastery boarding school for boys' secondary school Heilig Kreuz of the Sacred Cross Missionaries in Donauwörth and then worked at Deutsche Bank AG . In 1965 he moved to JP Morgan & Co. , where from 1970 he was responsible for the international business of the Paris branch as Vice President. From 1977, Viermetz headed JP Morgan's global foreign exchange trading in New York City . In 1980 he moved to the Frankfurt branch of the bank, where he was responsible for JP Morgan’s continental European business. In 1990 he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the JP Morgan Group, of which he was a member until 1999.

From 1999 to 2002, Viermetz was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG . From 2003 he was chairman of the supervisory board of Hypo Real Estate Holding AG.

In the banking crisis of 2008, Hypo Real Estate Holding AG was hit hard by the liquidity crisis. After a long struggle to find a solution, the company was nationalized. Kurt Viermetz resigned as chairman of the supervisory board after the resignation of the HRE CEO on October 10, 2008.

From 2005, Viermetz was also chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Börse AG ; he also resigned from this position in 2008.

Viermetz was an honorary citizen of the city of Augsburg and is considered a patron . He was a member of the board of trustees of the Atlantik-Brücke Association and was a board member of the Kurt and Felicitas Viermetz Foundation, which he and his wife founded on December 16, 2003 .

The Maximilian Museum Augsburg bequeathed Viermetz his extensive collection of gold and silver exhibits, the resulting particular in Augsburg works from the period of the Renaissance , the Baroque and Rococo contains. The museum is showing the important collection from July 4 to September 27, 2020 in an exhibition entitled “Brilliant Memento. Augsburg silver from the legacy of Kurt F. Viermetz ”.
