action

The year is 1280. The Marmara region is under Byzantine rule. Bursa (Prusa), Harmankaya (Chirmekia), İnegöl , Yarhisar, Karacahisar are under the rule of Christian local lords (Turkish: Tekfur ). The population consists of Byzantine villagers and nomadic and semi-nomadic Turkmen (Oghuz) and Tatar Eşirets (tribes). Outside the castles of the princes there is no civilization; Looting is the order of the day. One of the tribes in the area are the Kayı, one of the 24 Oghuz Eşirets. The Kayı came from Central Asia and were settled in Söğüt by the Seljuq state . The Kayı move to their Yaylak (summer pasture) Domaniç in spring . The Kayı leave their valuables in the castle of Tekfur of Bilecik , who has a good relationship with them, until their return in autumn . The chief of the Kayı is the aging Ertuğrul Bey. His wife is the Hayme Hatun. Ertuğrul Bey has three sons and a daughter who married into another Oghuz tribe, the Dodurga . Gündüz is his eldest son, his wife is Burla Hatun, their son is called Aydoğdu. Ertuğrul's middle son is called Savcı. He is married to Ayna Melek, her son is called Baykoca, her daughter is Banuçiçek. The youngest son of Ertuğrul is called Osman. Osman leads a carefree youth. He is not interested in the affairs of the Kayı.

As every year before setting off for the summer pastures, Ertuğrul visits Sheikh Edebalı , the spiritual advisor of the Kayı. The topic of conversation is the successor of Ertuğrul. Ertuğrul is concerned about Osman, whom he would like to see as his successor as head of the Kayı. He named it after the caliph Osman, who said Osman was supposed to wear the sword that Ertuğrul received from Seljuk Sultan Keykubad as a souvenir.

In the evening, Sheikh Edebalı visits Osman to persuade him to have more confidence. The next day, when Osman returns from a hunt, he meets Edebalı again, who provokes him with his comments about wasting time. Osman makes it clear that he doesn't want to lead. Leadership is the right of his wise brother Gündüz. Other conversations make it clear to Osman that the Oghuz need a leader tribe. Most of the Oghuz tribes in Anatolia lack the dynamism to rule, however, as they are exhausted from the long migration from Central Asia. The Kayı, who have settled down in Söğüt for a long time, would be this longed-for leader tribe who need a dynamic young ruler. As a result, Osman visits the sheikh, but the sheikh makes him wait. From the window he sees Malhun Hatun, the daughter of Sheikh Edebali, who immediately arouses his interest. He then spontaneously asks the sheikh for his daughter's hand. Edebali, however, fails this marriage. In the following it turns out that Edebali wants to get Osman to reflect on his words and to internalize a leadership position by rejecting. Again after a long wait in the Sheikh's waiting room, Osman nods off. He dreams of a tree that grows from his heart while the moon represents Malhun Hatun. Kumral Abdal, one of the sheik's monks, interprets this dream as a sign of future world domination.
