The city of Kyōtango was formed on April 1, 2004 from the former Chō Amino ( 網 野 町 , -chō ), Kumihama ( 久 美 浜 町 , -chō ), Mineyama ( 峰山 町 , -chō ), Ōmiya ( 大 宮 町 , -chō ), Tango ( 丹 後 町 , -chō ) and Yasaka ( 弥 栄 町 , -chō ). Kyōtango landed in third place after Tango and Hokutan in the name proposals.
