From 1978 to 1981 he received the Gyula Derkovits grant from the Ministry of Culture and Education. In 1980 he represented his country for the first time at the 39th Venice Biennale. In 1986 he received a scholarship from the Hungarian Academy in Rome . In 1990 he designed the Hungarian Magyar Pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale. In 2000 Fehér made his first trip to Israel. The first works in the style of photorealism were created in 1974 while studying at the Budapest Art Academy. Fehér initially dealt thematically with views of socialist everyday life such as the “worker of the month”, passers-by in the subway or in trams, but also photo templates from the family album that evoke a narrative thematization of personal experiences. These early paintings were mainly based on black and white contrasts.

A trip to Switzerland in 1981, which Hungarian citizens could only apply for every three years under strict conditions, ushered in a new period of painting in Fehér's work. In Basel he saw works by Henri Matisse , Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall for the first time , which questioned his photorealistic way of working. After returning to Hungary, his painting style changed to Expressionism . Fehér started a series about Jewish holidays like Yom Kippur and the Passover festival. There were also other topics from Jewish life that were taboo in Hungary at the beginning of the 1980s, and motifs that dealt with the annihilation of Judaism by the National Socialists , such as "Rekviem I." (1984, oil on linen, 250 × 195 cm, Magyar Nemzeti Galéria Collection, Budapest). The painting was created after the photo taken secretly by Alberto Errera in 1944 during the cremation of corpses in the crematoria of Auschwitz during the Hungary Action . Since then, people in Fehér's pictures have only appeared as outlines, becoming symbols of strangeness, isolation and transience. The paintings are characterized by a reduced formal language, based on colored surfaces and lines that are formulated in a multi-faceted manner. Individual image elements alternate between abstraction and photorealism.

“Fehér paints serious, timeless and unmoved visions of the ' condition humaine '. Nevertheless, his pictures, which reflect basic human sensitivities, are composed of everyday events and capture frozen moments in the flow of time, as it were. This gives rise to compositions that suggest that loneliness is an unchangeable fact of human existence, that the individual is locked in his inner world, that extreme vulnerability is an inevitable fact. ”( Lóránd Hegyi , 1992)
