LZ 21

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zeppelin LZ 21 was Count Zeppelin's 21st airship and the ninth airship of the German Army .

history

LZ 21 made its first voyage on November 10, 1913. The airship was given the name Z VI as a military identifier.

At the beginning of the First World War in early August 1914, Z VI was stationed in Cologne . During the conquest of Liège , Z VI carried out a night bombing raid on the forts of the city, which was probably the first air raid of the world war. On August 5th at 10 p.m. the zeppelin took off from Cologne, laden with 200 kg of explosives. The bombing took place at 3 a.m. on August 6, 1914, killing nine civilians. Hit by several shrapnel from the defensive fire, the airship had to make an emergency landing in a forest near Bonn due to severe gas loss . Since the damage could no longer be repaired, Z VI was scrapped on site.
