LZ 22

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zeppelin LZ 22 was Count Zeppelin's 22nd airship and the tenth airship of the German Army .

history

The first trip from LZ 22 took place on January 8, 1914. Z VII was the military identification of the airship.

At the beginning of the First World War in early August 1914, Z VII was stationed in Baden-Oos . On August 21, 1914, Z VII received the order to explore the positions of the French armed forces that had advanced across the border into Alsace and to launch attacks on the French. Since the trip into the wooded Vosges for the reconnaissance of the French troops took place at a low altitude, and the airship could not escape the enemy by climbing due to its low rise of 1500 meters in the almost 1000 meter high terrain, the French infantry succeeded with theirs Carabiners to perforate the hull of the ship many times. After dropping its 500 kg ammunition, the zeppelin turned towards the home port of Baden-Oos due to the loss of gas. However, the loss of gas was so severe that an emergency landing at Sankt Quirin was necessary. The ship was so badly damaged that it was scrapped.
