La Macarena is a municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento del Meta in Colombia in the Llanos . La Macarena has a share in the natural park Parque Nacional Natural Tinigua and Serrania de la Macarena and is known for the colorful river Caño Cristales .

La Macarena is located 280 km south of Bogotá at an altitude of 233 m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 25 ° C. The municipality of La Macarena has an area of 11,229 km², of which 11,016 km² are in the rural part of the municipality. The municipality is bordered to the east by Vista Hermosa and San José del Guaviare and Calamar in the Guaviare department , to the west and south by San Vicente del Caguán in the Caquetá department and to the north by La Uribe and Vista Hermosa.

La Macarena was founded in 1954 by a family who had been evicted because of the Violencia . La Macarena has had parish status since 1980.

economy

The main industries of La Macarena are cattle production and agriculture . In particular, rice , sorghum , corn , sugar cane , bananas , cassava , cocoa and cotton are grown.

Infrastructure

La Macarena has a small airport that is served from Villavicencio. By car, La Macarena is about ten hours from Villavicencio and 17 hours from Bogotá . There are also boat connections over the Río Guaviare and Río Guayabero from Puerto Concordia .
