As Obersee the larger of the two is lakes of Lake Constance referred to.
geography
The Obersee is 472 km² and extends over 63 km between Bregenz and Bodman-Ludwigshafen . Its greatest width is 14 km. It drains over the Seerhein in Konstanz into the Untersee, the main inflow is the Alpine Rhine .
Parts of the Obersee are the Überlinger See , the Bregenz Bay and the Konstanzer Funnel , whereby the Überlinger See is also commonly regarded as a separate part of the lake and therefore the term Obersee only refers to the section between Bregenz and Konstanz.
Neighboring states are Switzerland with the cantons of Thurgau and St. Gallen , Austria with the federal state of Vorarlberg and Germany with the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria . The borders between the neighboring states on the main southeastern part of the Obersee have never been jointly defined (further explanations under Lake Constance ), only the smaller northwest Überlinger See is completely German territory.
Origin of name
In Roman times the Obersee was called Lacus Venetus , Lacus Brigantinus and Lacus Constantinus . In the Middle Ages the name Lacus Bodamicus (Lake Constance) prevailed. The Untersee ( Lacus Acronius ) gradually fell under this name , which is why the actual Lake Constance was given the name Obersee .
