action

The farm girl Emily Lyon constantly has to defend herself against the pursuits of the men. One day she met the famous painter George Romney , who was driving past her in a carriage just as Emily was washing herself in a lake. Romney is delighted with this unpolished creature and promises to employ her as his model should she come to London . Romney soon becomes Emily's tutor; he teaches her social etiquette and good manners. Equipped in this way, she soon found access to high society. One day, Laurie, Emily's friend, asks her to stand up for her brother so that he can be relieved of his service in the British Navy. Both young women therefore make their way to see the ship's commander, Sir John Payne. During this voyage, Emily meets the young naval officer Horatio Nelson , but both paths initially separate again.

Emily begins a love affair with Payne, and when Payne has to go back to sea, she begins another love affair with his friend Sir Harry Featherstone. At Harry's side, Emily experiences a full life for the first time, which, however, devours huge sums of money. Soon Featherstone drowns in debt and also takes on a banker. This challenges Featherstone for insult to a duel in which Harry dies. Emily's social crash takes place in no time. She ends up in a brothel owned by Mrs. Love, where she meets the doctor Dr. Graham, who takes her into his house. Here she meets Romney again, who brings her together with several gentlemen of society. Among them is Lord Charles Greville, who desperately wants to marry Emily. But he is too young to be married and needs the approval of his uncle Lord William Hamilton beforehand . Hamilton, 35 years older than Emily, is electrified by her beauty and asks for her hand. Both marry, and the peasant maid and noble whore Emily finally becomes Lady Emma Hamilton , wife of the British ambassador to the court of the King of Naples . The ambassador's wife quickly made friends with Queen Maria Carolina , who advocated close ties to England - at least since the French revolutionaries guillotined their sister Marie Antoinette and threatened the integrity of Naples .

The peaceful time at court comes to an abrupt end when the French revolutionary army approaches. In the meantime, Horatio Nelson has risen to the rank of admiral and is sent to the Kingdom of Naples, England's war ally. Nelson and Emma Hamilton see each other there for the first time in many years. Both experience extremely happy moments of love before Nelson has to go back to battle one day. When he fell at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, his lover was heartbroken. Emma Hamilton soon fell into poverty and her health deteriorated rapidly. Forgotten, ill and lonely, she dies in 1815.

Reviews

The Lexicon of International Films saw Lady Hamilton - Between Shame and Love a "grosser remake of ' Lord Nelson's Last Love '".

The film's large lexicon of people called the film a “colorful, internationally financed costume and historical film”.

In kino-db.de you can read: “Colorful costume film about the changeful fate of the influential Lady Hamilton”.

The Protestant film observer drew the following conclusion: “Allegedly the life of Admiral Nelson's beloved is portrayed; Numerous palpable retouches in favor of the character of the lady as well as the restriction to a colorful picture book of her love stories prevent an accurate description. Otherwise partly sentimental, partly frivolous and quite sluggish overall. Unnecessary."
