Keminmaa [ ˈkɛminmɑː ] is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland . It covers the area around the city of Kemi . The municipality includes the places Alapaakkola, Maula, Itäkoski, Hirmula, Ilmola, Laurila, Koroiskylä, Lautiosaari and Liedakkala.
Today's Keminmaa is the historical core of the city of Kemi and was the most important settlement in Lapland until the early modern times. The old church, built between 1551 and 1553, is dedicated to the Archangel Michael . In addition to the church of Alatornio , which is no longer preserved in its original form , it is the oldest church in Lapland and the northernmost of the medieval stone churches in Finland. In it, the mummified body of pastor Nikolaus Rungius, who died in 1629, can be viewed. The neoclassical "New Church" was founded by Tsar Alexander I ; the building by the architect Carl Ludwig Engel was completed in 1827.
Because of the sustained post-glacial continental lift , the port of Kemis, located at the mouth of the Kemijoki River , was hardly navigable in the 19th century. In 1869 the city was moved a few kilometers downstream to the open sea; Most of the residents moved to the newly founded town of Kemi , the remaining came together in the rural community of Kemi ( Kemin maalaiskunta ); In 1979 her name was officially changed to Keminmaa.

politics
As in general in the rural areas of Northern Finland, the Center Party is the strongest political force in Keminmaa . In the local elections in 2008 it narrowly missed an absolute majority and has 17 out of 35 members of the local council, the highest decision-making body for local affairs. The second strongest force is the Left Alliance , which, as in general, is disproportionately strong in Lapland. It won 22.4% of the vote and has eight seats on the local council. The Social Democrats and the National Collection Party , although belonging to the three major parties nationwide, hardly play a role in Keminmaa with single-digit election results and two members of the local council each. The local electoral list Keminmaalaisten Parhaaksi (“For the good of the people of Keminmaa”) entered the municipal council with six seats .
