1-Octadecanol (often also stearyl alcohol ) is a long-chain, monohydric alcohol that belongs to the group of fatty alcohols . Due to its low polarity , in contrast to the short-chain alcohols, it is no longer soluble in water, but is soluble in numerous non-polar solvents .

1-Octadecanol belongs to the group of nonionic surfactants that stabilize water-in-oil emulsions (also known as W / O emulsions for short ). Because of its relatively weak surfactant effect, it is mostly used in combination with other surfactants , mostly with cetyl alcohol (so-called cetyl stearyl alcohol ). 1-Octadecanol is often used as an ointment base in cosmetic articles .
