Exhibition building of the Langen Foundation, October 2014

The Langen Foundation is a private art foundation established in 2002 . It is dedicated to the art collection of Marianne and Viktor Langen. The foundation maintains an exhibition building designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando on the site of the former NATO missile station near Neuss. In addition to changing presentations from the collections, exhibitions of contemporary art are shown here.

history

Viktor Langen (1910–1990), Düsseldorf entrepreneur and President of the Chamber of Commerce, grandson of Eugen Langen and Marianne Langen, née Heimann (1911–2004), granddaughter of Farina heir Johann Maria Heimann , are among the well-known collectors and donors of art in the Rhineland. The couple began collecting art soon after the end of World War II. They used the stimulating cultural environment of the Rhineland, but also traveled to the USA, where they visited museums and private collections , found out about current trends in Paris, or acquired works of classical modernism in Basel . At the same time, their interest has always been in the art of the strange, the different, and so the Rhenish collectors have put together one of the most important collections of Japanese art in Europe over the years.

Viktor and Marianne Langen lived with their art. Her houses in Meerbusch and Ascona were full of pictures and sculptures that were periodically replaced. In 1979 they set up a private museum in Ascona , in which they housed their collection of Japanese scroll paintings. In 2002 Marianne Langen set up the Langen Foundation to make her collection accessible to the public. Since 2004 the Langen Collection has been located in the specially built art and exhibition house of the Langen Foundation on the site of the former NATO missile station near Neuss. The exhibition building is within walking distance of the Museum Island Hombroich, but is organizationally and programmatically independent of it and the Insel Hombroich Foundation . Christiane Maria Schneider has been the artistic director of the Langen Foundation since 2010, Karla Zerressen, the daughter of Sabine Langen-Crasemann (board member), is the managing director of the "Langen Foundation Event". In April 2014 it became known that the heirs of Viktor and Marianne Langen will sell a number of works that have been exhibited on loan at the foundation. The FAZ art critic Andreas Rossmann saw in the sale the danger that “only second- and third-rate pieces would remain in the collection” and assumed that the heirs would reduce the foundation to a tax-saving model.

architecture

The new building complex was designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and opened in September 2004. The visible structure of the formwork panels on the walls made of smoothed concrete is characteristic of many of the buildings by the Pritzker Prize winner . Tadao Ando's pronounced predilection for concrete and his feeling for the specifics of the location also determine his design for the Langen Foundation: The building made of concrete, glass and steel is hidden behind green earthen walls, some of it is buried deep into the ground.

The exhibition house consists of two architecturally different and interconnected building wings and has a total exhibition area of 1,300 square meters. The so-called Japan room is located in the ground-level concrete block - an unusually long and narrow gallery that Tadao Ando designed as a “room of silence” especially for the Japanese part of the Langen collection. Two eight-meter-high exhibition rooms sunk into the ground are planned for the modern part of the collection. In the case of temporary exhibitions, all rooms are used differently. The building was realized by the founder Marianne Langen without any funding, for her it was "the greatest work of art that I have ever bought".
