Lars Israël Wahlman (born April 17, 1870 in Hedemora , † September 18, 1952 in Danderyd ) was a Swedish architect . He is considered a representative of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Nordic national romanticism .

education

Lars Israël Wahlman studied under Isak Gustaf Clason at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm from 1889 to 1893 and then practiced in Clason's office. In 1906 he undertook various study trips to England , France , Holland and Germany . Strongly influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and the effort to use natural materials, he created his first works.

Work and life

Examples of Wahlman's rustic design of his buildings are Hjularöd Castle in Skåne (1894–97), a romantic, French-inspired fairy tale castle made of brick , and Tjolöholm Castle near Kungsbacka (1898–1904), designed in the Tudor style especially for the Granite was imported from Scotland for the facades and his own home and studio, Villa Tallom in Danderyd near Stockholm (1904), a wooden house in national romantic style, which with its cantilevered upper floor is reminiscent of the rural architecture of Dalarna . But he also showed an interest in the art of building with modern building materials, so he was hired as an aesthetic advisor for the design of the Skurubron in Nacka , an arched bridge made of concrete and the largest of its time in Northern Europe, inaugurated in 1905.

Wahlman was very active as a church architect. He designed the Engelbrektskyrkan in Stockholm (1906-14), the Nynäshamns kyrka in Nynashamn (1919-29), Svenska Margaretakyrkan in Oslo (1922-25), Sandvikens kyrka in Sandviken (1921-31) and Ansgar Chapel at Birka on Björkö (1930). His numerous church projects also made him interested in room acoustics .

Wahlman was first a lecturer and after 1912 professor at the Technical University in Stockholm, where he taught, among other things, in the subjects of landscape architecture and traditional timber construction technology.
