Lars Jørgen Madsen took part in the Olympic Games five times . At the Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris , he was in front of Ole Østmo and Charles Paumier du Verger with the Army Rifle in the standing position Olympic champion . With 305 points, he was six points ahead of runner-up Østmo. He was eighth in the kneeling position and 16th in the lying position. In the three-position fight, he was fifth in the individual and fourth with the team. Since no shooting competitions were held in 1904 , Madsen took part for the second time at the 1908 Olympic Games in London , where he competed in two competitions. With the army rifle he missed a medal win in the three-position fight with the team again in fourth place, he finished the individual in 14th place. The three-position fight with the free rifle in Stockholm in 1912 was much more successful . He finished the individual behind Paul Colas and ahead of Niels Larsen in silver, while he won bronze in the team competition together with Ole Olsen , Niels Larsen, Niels Andersen , Laurits Larsen and Jens Hajslund . With the small-bore rifle in the prone position, he finished fifth with the team and eighth with the army rifle. In addition, Madsen also competed with the Free Pistol , but did not get beyond 14th place. Eight years later he started in Antwerp in a total of eleven disciplines. He achieved five top ten placements, two of them on the podium: with the army rifle he secured the silver medal behind Carl Osburn and in front of Lawrence Nuesslein while standing still . In the team competition he was together with Niels Larsen, Anders Peter Nielsen , Anders Petersen and Erik Sætter-Lassen Olympic champion in front of the US and Swedish teams. Madsen played his last games in 1924 in Paris , where he finished 24th with the small bore rifle and the army rifle in the prone position. With the team he reached 6th place with the army rifle.

Madsen was also very successful at world championships . As early as 1899 he was world champion with the free rifle in the three-position fight in Loosduinen and won bronze in the team classification. In the standing position he secured silver. Further title wins followed in Paris in 1900 and in Vienna in 1908 with the free rifle in the standing position, and in 1911 he took second place in Rome . In 1914 and 1922 he won a total of five bronze medals in various disciplines with the free rifle in Viborg and Milan : in the three-position fight and in the prone position in 1914, in the standing position in 1922 and both times with the team in the three-position fight. He also won bronze with the Free Pistol in Reims in 1924 . In addition, he was runner-up in 1924 with the free rifle in the kneeling position.
