history

The name comes from the Latin later or lateris (dt. Brick ) and to this day the place is closely connected with the brick kiln. The development of the place began around the 11th century , but it only became important in 1272, when the Ghibelline Arezzo wanted to protect itself from the expansion of Guelfi Florence and built a castle in Laterina. This was taken in 1288 after eight days of siege of Florence. Ten years later the Rocca was built on the same spot , this time built by the Florentines and fortified more strongly, but this time only for a short time: the Ubertini recaptured the place for the Aretins in 1304. Around 1326 until about ten years later, there were further changes of rulers: The Archbishop of Arezzo, Guido Tarlati , had the place destroyed, his successor from the Ubertini family rebuilt it, this time with the help of the Florentines, the place then also the Republic affiliated. The Ghibellines from Arezzo tried several times to bring the place back into their possession until they were finally defeated on November 5, 1384 in Laterina of Florence (with French support). In 1744 the community was classified in the district of Ambratal (it. Valdambra, the Ambra is a left tributary of the Arno), from the turn of the century it was then subject to the Podesteria Montevarchi . Some buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved until today, such as B. Parts of the city walls, two city gates ( Porta Guinigi / Torre Guinigi and Porta Fredda / Porta Ghianderino ) and parts of the fortress ( Rocca ).

On January 1, 2018, the place merged with the neighboring municipality of Pergine Valdarno to form the new municipality of Laterina Pergine Valdarno. In the referendum on October 29 and 30, 2017, 57.00% (52.37% turnout) voted in favor of the union in Laterina. The law for the merger of the two municipalities is Legge Regionale n.55 of December 5th, 2017. The town hall is still in Laterina.
