Laurence Martin

Sir Laurence Woodward Martin (born July 30, 1928 in St Austell ) is a British military pilot and political scientist .

Life

Martin attended St. Austell Grammar School and then studied at Christ's College of Cambridge University (BA, MA) and Yale University (MA, PhD ). From 1948 to 1951 he was a pilot in the Royal Air Force .

From 1955 he was an instructor in political science at Yale University. In 1956 he became Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts and in 1961 Associate Professor of European Diplomacy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1958/59 he was a Rockefeller Fellow for Advanced Study. In 1964 he moved to the University of Wales as Woodrow Wilson Professor of International Politics and in 1968 to King's College London . There he headed the Department of War Studies . In 1978 he became Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle University . He has been Professor Emeritus since 1991.

In 1981 he was Lees Knowles Lecture in Cambridge and Reith Lecturer ( BBC ). From 1985 to 1990 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Wales. From 1991 to 1996 he was head of the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. In 1998 he took over the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at CSIS in Washington, DC In 2010 he was a Bodichon Fellow at Girton College, University of Cambridge. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Strategic Studies .

In 1987 he became Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear .

Martin is married and has two children.
