Lawrence Freedman
Sir Lawrence David Freedman , KCMG , CBE (born December 7, 1948 in Tynemouth ) is a British political scientist and military historian .
Life
Freedman was born the son of a British naval officer ( Lieutenant Commander ) and later AJEX official and his wife. He attended Whitley Bay Grammar School in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside and then studied at Victoria University of Manchester (BA), University of York (BPhil), and University of Oxford ( DPhil ).
He conducted research at Nuffield College , Oxford and at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London. From 1976 to 1978 he worked at the Royal Institute of International Affairs . From 1978 to 1982 he was Head of Policy Studies. In 1978 he became a Fellow in the Department of War Studies at King's College London . There he received a professorship in 1982 and headed the department from 1982 to 1997. In 2001 he became Dean of the School of Social Science and Public Policy and in 2003 Vice Principal (Strategy & Development) of King's College London. In 1993 he was a guest speaker at the Liddell Hart Center for Military Archives .
Freedman has also been a member of the Council of the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies , previously of the International Institute for Strategic Studies , since 1993 . From 1983 to 1998 he was chairman of the Committee on International Peace and Security of the Social Science Research Council . From 2001 to 2009 he was a trustee of the Imperial War Museum . He has also worked as a newspaper columnist and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Strategic Studies . He was named the Official Historian of the Falklands War in 1997. In 2009 Freedman became Privy Councilor and in that capacity was a member of the Iraq Inquiry Committee (2009–2011).
He is the author of numerous books on nuclear strategy , the Cold War and other security policy topics.
Freedman is married to Judith Freedman (Pinsent Masons Professor of Taxation Law) and has two children.
