Laurentius Church Kosel
Round tower

The Laurentius Church in Kosel , a Romanesque stone church with a massive round tower , dates from the 12th century.

history

The village of Kosel is first mentioned in the 12th century under the name of Cosleve as a fiefdom of the Bishop of Schleswig . The church, which is referred to as a chapel in a Catalogium or Registrum of all Pröbsteyen of the Schleswig diocese from 1300 cited by Anton Heimreich , probably dates from the same time . It is dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome . The name may be related to the Danish King Erik Plovpenning who was murdered on Laurentius Day, August 10, 1250 , in the Schlei near Missunde .

After the Reformation, the Kosel church, unlike the other churches in Schwansen, was not subject to any noble church patronage , but the king remained the sole patron. Pastor Bernhard Flor, who took office in 1646, not only repaired the church and replaced the thatched roof with wooden shingles, but also took care of most of the interior fittings.

Interior of the Laurentius Church

In 1863 the church was completely renovated. The walls were raised by one meter and the south wall received three large windows. The small Romanesque windows are only preserved on the north wall. The woman's door on the north wall was bricked up. The roof was now covered with slate. The crypt under the chancel with the graves of the owner of Gut Eschelmark was walled up.

Altar and ceiling painting in the choir

Another renovation took place in 1968, during which the vault painting, which was whitewashed in the 19th century, was exposed and restored as far as possible. The seven grave slabs that had been in the center aisle since 1863 were now placed on the outer walls of the chancel. The church got a brick floor instead.

Construction and equipment

The church probably dates from the time of Waldemar I , who, as Jarl of Schleswig and King of Denmark, had the earlier wooden churches replaced by stone churches in many places in his empire. It is a small, single-nave building with a retracted box choir, which was later vaulted and extended by a brick extension. The round tower, which was subsequently connected to the nave , the ground floor of which is made of field stone, probably also from the 12th century, was later built with brick. It is unlikely that it was a defensive tower .

Crucifixion group in the Laurentius Church Kosel (Schleswig-Holstein) with the Saints Catherine and Laurentius

The oldest piece of equipment is a font , the many other fonts from the Waldemar era, u. a. the one in the neighboring St. Petri Church in Rieseby. The rest of the interior, like the painting of the choir vault, largely dates from the time of the pastor Flor. Only the Gothic crucifixion group , which is attached to the altar structure from 1669, is older . However, the figures flanking the crucified one are not the Mother of God Mary and the Apostle John, but Saint Catherine of Alexandria - recognizable by the wheel - and the church patron Laurentius.

A special feature is a painting from 1683 next to the pulpit, which shows the first eight pastors after the Reformation, from a priest who converted to Lutheranism to Bernhard Flor, who died that year. The first, a Herr Benedictus, stands in front of an altar on which a crucifix and a chalice symbolize the Lord's Supper in both forms , and points to the Gospel. The rosary and miter at his feet symbolize the conquered papacy . Bernhard Flor, last in line, holds the church order in his hand. Behind him is the church he renovated.
