Leo Nachtlicht (born August 12, 1872 in Bielitz , † September 22, 1942 in Berlin ) was a Jewish German architect .

Life

Leo Nachtlicht came to Berlin at the age of seven, where he first attended the community school and later the secondary school . After studying at the Technical University of Charlottenburg and the Technical University of Karlsruhe , which he graduated with the degree of engineering degree in Karlsruhe, he first worked in the architecture office of Bruno Möhring in Berlin. From 1904 to 1933 he ran his own studio in Berlin: There he built villas, country houses, the Gourmenia Palace at the zoological garden, various interior fittings for apartments, shops, arts and crafts and architecture exhibitions. In 1913 he taught at the 1910 composed of German Werkbund established advanced school of decorative art ; Hermann Henselmann was his employee from 1928 to 1930 .

Leo Nachtlicht was a member of the Berlin Architects and Engineers Association , the German Werkbund and the Association of German Architects ; his art collection of contemporary painting, including pictures by Emil Nolde , Ernst Oppler and Paula Modersohn-Becker , was auctioned in 1932. As a Jew, he was not accepted into the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts in 1933/1934 and thus lost the opportunity to work as an independent architect in Germany. In 1938 he applied in vain for a work permit in London.

His daughters Ursula (1909–1999) and Ilse (* 1912) managed to emigrate on April 18, 1939. Ursula was able to gain a foothold as a photographer in London. Leo Nachtlicht and his wife Anna died on their way to the camp in 1942. They were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weissensee .

On April 29, 2012, a stumbling block for Leo Nachtlicht was laid in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and in November 2012 BIKINI Berlin honored the work of Leo Nachtlicht with an exhibition.
