Leo Prochownik

Leo Prochownik (born June 18, 1875 in Landsberg ad Warthe , † October 31, 1936 in Berlin ) was a German figure, landscape and marine painter , etcher and illustrator .

Life

Leo Prochownik's parents were David and Ottilie Prochownik, b. Robinson (1845-1911). Before starting school, the family moved to Bremen , then to Berlin . David Prochownik and his brothers Wilhelm and Jonas ran an import company for perfumery in Berlin, Ritterstrasse 45 (“Aryanized” 1938).

After graduating from school, Leo Prochownik joined a decorating company as an apprentice. In this context he was u. a. involved in the interior decoration of the Kroll Opera House . At the same time he studied at the teaching facility of the Berlin Museum of Applied Arts . In October 1895 he went to Munich for further training , but returned to Berlin in 1896, where he worked as an illustrator and advertising artist. In June 1897 he began studying at the Dresden Art Academy, where he studied with Bantzer and Gotthard Kuehl. In 1904 he returned to Berlin and in January 1905 he was accepted as a master class student by Karl Köpping at the Berlin Academy of the Arts .

In 1909 Prochownik married Gertrud Borgzinner (1884–1982). After a short stay in Copenhagen , they returned to Berlin, where they initially lived in Berlin-Steglitz , and from 1912 on Landauer Straße near Rüdesheimer Platz.

In January 1917 Prochovnik was called up for military service. He fell ill soon afterwards and was discharged from military service in March 1917 after a stay in the Kortau military hospital .

In 1919 the daughter Marianne was born.

From 1925 onwards, Leo Prochownik came into contact with Jewish intellectuals through the work of his wife Gertrud, who had taken over the working group for Jewish employment certificates in Berlin. Among other things, the family was friends with Salomon Adler-Rudel . He made a series of portraits of Jewish youths whom he had met in the Jewish Volksheim. Originally a book edition of the portraits was intended.

Leo Prochownik worked as an illustrator, a. a. active for the magazine Jugend . On vacation trips to Liseleje and Rügenwaldermünde he made landscape sketches, also in 1929 in Cadempino and 1930–1935 annually in the monastery on Hiddensee .

In 1929 Prochownik joined the Porza artist community.

In 1936 he died after a long illness. His wife Gertrud survived the Nazi period in hiding with Johanna and Lothar Kreyssig and emigrated to London via Australia. Some of Prochwnik's works were found in the basement of the Jewish Hospital in Berlin after the Second World War.
