Leonhard Johann Bertholdt

Leonhard Johann Bertholdt (born May 8, 1774 in Emskirchen , † March 31, 1822 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Life

Leonhard Johann Bertholdt was the son of Georg Leonhard Bertholdt, Metzer, mayor and committee company captain in Emskirchen.

At first he attended school in Emskirchen and in 1786 came to the Royal Prussian Princely School in Neustadt an der Aisch . From the summer semester of 1792 to the winter semester of 1795/1796 he studied philosophy , philology and theology at the University of Erlangen under the direction of August Friedrich Pfeiffer , with a focus on oriental, historical and theological-philosophical studies. On December 16, 1795 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil.

From 1796 to 1800 he did private studies in Emskirchen and occasionally preached after his exams to become a preacher.

After his habilitation in philosophy on January 20, 1802 at the University of Erlangen, he was a private lecturer . On September 8, 1803 he became an adjunct of the Philosophical Faculty and on March 20, 1805 he was appointed associate professor.

From February 23, 1807 he took over the interim representation of the second university preacher position before he was appointed university preacher on August 10, 1808; he also took over the direction of the homiletic seminar.

On October 22, 1808, he became a full professor of theology, and after he completed his habilitation on April 18, 1809 as professor of theology with his work Christologia Judaeorum Jesu apostolorumque aetate in compendium redacta observationisbusque illustrata , he was appointed third professor of the Old Testament with a seat and vote in the Senate and Faculty.

Together with Christoph Ammon he published the critical journal of the latest theological literature , which he took over editorially from 1814 on and of which there were a total of 14 volumes.

He turned down two offers to the University of Heidelberg and the University of Greifswald in 1815 and was promoted to second professor in 1816.

In 1822 he became district consistorial councilor and member of the administrative committee. He was Vice-Rector in 1816/1817 and 1821/1822 .

Leonhard Johann Berthold married on February 22, 1818 in Altdorf near Nuremberg Katharina Sabine (April 28, 1784 in Altdorf near Nuremberg; † March 27, 1862 in Erlangen), daughter of the Altdorf mayor Johann Friedrich Bauder (1745-1813). They had a child together.
