Lilian Mercedes Letona

Lilian Mercedes Letona (born September 24, 1954 - August 1, 1983 ) was a Salvadoran guerrilla , communist revolutionary and member of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). She is also known by her battle name Comandante Clelia (Eng. Commander Clelia) and took part in the civil war in El Salvador .

biography

Lilian Mercedes Letona was born in 1954 in Turín , a town in the Ahuachapán department , as the daughter of a teacher and a trader. As a member of the student movement, she graduated in painting in 1972 before joining the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo , the people's revolutionary army. In the student movement, she advocated the admission of her sister Mercedes del Carmen Letona ( Comandante Luisa ), who later took over responsibility for Radio Venceremos .

From 1973 onwards, Clelia incorporated workers from the "Cinturón Obrero" factory in San Salvador into the clandestine workers' unit of the ERP. She joined the urban guerrilla movement and took part in armed actions and spreading revolutionary propaganda . In January 1974 , at the age of 19, she went underground to avoid prosecution, where she helped set up the Partido de la Revolución Salvadoreña (PRS-ERP, Salvadoran Revolutionary Party ). She became a member of the Central Committee of the FMLN in 1977 and, as such, was responsible for both the party itself and for the preparations for the 1981 general offensive in the city of San Salvador. She was arrested on February 11th of the same year.

In the course of the Desaparecida , Clelia stayed for 22 days in a secret prison of the Policía Nacional , where she was found by the International Committee of the Red Cross and then transferred to the women's prison in Ilopango . She was released in June 1983 by an amnesty decree of the ARENA government by Álvaro Magaña . She then joined the Francisco Sánchez Military Alliance of the FMLN. A few weeks after her release, she died in combat.
