Leuchtenbergia principis is the only plant species of the monotypical genus Leuchtenbergia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name honors the Duke of Leuchtenberg Eugène de Beauharnais .

description

Leuchtenbergia principis grows individually, sprouts only occasionally and reaches heights of 20 to 35 centimeters (rarely up to 70 centimeters). The roots are large and fleshy, the shoots spherical to short cylindrical. There are no ribs , but there are noticeable warts . The somewhat leaf-like, 10 to 12 centimeters long warts are triangular in cross section. At its end is an areole from which flattened, flexible, paper-like thorns arise. The yellowish, often twisted thorns are up to 15 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, yellow, fragrant flowers appear at the end of the areoles close to the body and open during the day. They are up to 8 centimeters long and 5 to 6 centimeters in diameter. Your pericarpel is scaled. The egg-shaped to elongated fruits are dry when ripe . They are up to 3 centimeters long and a perennial remnant of flowers adheres to them. They contain broad, oval, black to brown seeds 2.4 millimeters long and 2 millimeters in diameter.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Leuchtenbergia principis is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Guanajuato , Hidalgo , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosi , Tamaulipas and Zacatecas in the vegetation of the Chihuahua Desert on limestone soils .

The first description of Leuchtenbergia principis was in 1848 by William Jackson Hooker .

Leuchtenbergia principis was listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species in 1992 . Due to its widespread use, however, it was downgraded four years later to Appendix II - which contains all the cactus plants. Leuchtenbergia principis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified as not endangered in nature.

Hybrids

Leuchtenbergia principis is probably closely related to the genus Ferocactus , with which it forms several hybridsFerobergia Ono & Y.Itô ):

  • × Ferobergia 'Gil Tegelberg' ( Leuchtenbergia principis × Ferocactus acanthodes )
  • × Ferobergia 'Eizan' ( Ferocactus histrix × Leuchtenbergia principis )
  • × Ferobergia 'Kosyu-Gyoku' ( Leuchtenbergia principis × Ferocactus wislizeni var. Herrerae )
  • × Ferobergia 'Violet' ( Leuchtenbergia principis × Ferocactus fordii )
  • × Ferobergia 'Rody' ( Leuchtenbergia principis × Ferocactus gracilis )

It is also closely related to the genera ThelocactusThelobergia Hirao ) and StenocactusEchinobergia Mottram ).

Botanical history

Iconotype of Leuchtenbergia principis - drawn by Walter Hood Fitch

It is possible that William Jackson Hooker took over the name Leuchtenbergia principis from Friedrich Ernst Ludwig von Fischer , who was director of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden from 1823 to 1850 . In Karl Moritz Schumann's treatment of the Cactaceae from 1894, the genus is therefore referred to as Leuchtenbergia fish. & Hook. listed: “With regard to the author's rights, it should be noted that it was first named by Fischer in the Petersburg Garden in honor of Prince Eugène de Beaumarchais [sic!], Duke of Leuchtenberg. The first description comes from Hooker. According to our current practice, the name must also be assigned to the last author. "

Leuchtenbergia principis had been in European collections since 1846. Soon after the description by Hooker, it seems to have not been cultivated for some time and was considered a rarity. By the beginning of the 20th century, however, Leuchtenbergia principis was again fairly widespread in Europe.
