background

Singer Nyla

Light It Up was originally recorded for Major Lazer's third studio album by Major Lazer and singer Nyla, who became known as a member of the R&B duo Brick & Lace . The album version belongs to the reggaeton genre , the rhythm has a high tempo and Nyla's voice has been distorted. After the success of Lean On , a similar song with increased influences from trap and dancehall elements was planned as a further single release . Light It Up was re-recorded accordingly and new rap verses from Fuse ODG were added. Major Lazer originally wanted to work with the British rapper while the album was being recorded, but this failed due to lack of time. The remix contains the elements mentioned above, the tempo has been reduced and the lead sound has been revised. Instead of the distortion of Nyla's voice in the album version, the original vocals were used. A drop was added before newly added trumpet sounds kick in.

Reviews

The album version of Light It Up was called "heavy dancehall banger" by Randall Roberts of the Los Angeles Times . Tonspion magazine described the remix version of Light It Up as "not quite as radio compatible as their monster hit [Lean On]", but as "definitely an early contender for the first summer hit".
