The list of stumbling blocks in Rees contains all the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in Rees as part of the art project of the same name . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Rees.

Lina Carolina Straus, who was born in Hanover on November 23, 1856, married Bernhard Straus, with whom she had Hermann, Lena, Siegfried and Walter. During the times of National Socialism, she was able to clearly feel anti-Semitism. For example, her husband's tombstone, who died in 1930, was desecrated after the seizure of power. The family butcher's shop also got fewer and fewer customers until the family finally had to give up the butcher's shop and in 1937 they had to flee to Holland with their children. After her imprisonment in 1942, she died on December 23, 1943 in the Westerbork assembly camp in the Netherlands. | |

Sophie Zilversmil, daughter of Bernhard Straus and stepdaughter of Lina Straus, fled to Holland earlier than the rest of the family after her father died in 1930. In 1937 she married her husband there, with whom she was deported to Sobibor in 1941 and murdered. | ||||

Hermann Straus was born on November 6th, 1896 in Millingen. He later moved to Bochum and got married there. Like his family, he fled to Holland and later to Belgium until he was deported to the Saint Cyprien internment camp in 1940 and then relocated to Auschwitz, where he was declared dead. | ||||

Lena Lene Helene Helena Berets is the daughter of Lina and Bernhard Straus, who was born on June 2nd, 1898 in Millingen. She stayed in Millingen and later married. After the seizure of power, she fled to Holland with her family and her husband, but was imprisoned in Westerbork on October 28, 1943. She was then deported to Auschwitz via Theresienstadt and finally murdered in Auschwitz on September 28, 1944. | ||||

Here lived Siegfried Fritz Straus, born on March 8th, 1900 in Millingen, was very active in Millingen. He was a member of the Millinger Quartet Association and took part in the Schützen. He initially lived in Millingen and did not get married. He probably worked for the family business as a butcher. After the seizure of power, he finally fled to Holland with his family. Siegfried married Hilde Andriesse on July 15, 1942 in Amsterdam. Hilde was deported to Sobibor in April 1943 and murdered. Siegfried was imprisoned in Westerbork and then deported via Sobibor to the SS labor camp Dorohucza , where he died on November 30, 1943. | ||||

Walter Straus, born on January 12th, 1901 in Millingen, remained celibate like his brother Siegfried and initially in Milingen. He worked in the family butcher's shop and was in the second team at Fortuna Millingen. After the seizure of power, he probably moved to Hanover, where his mother was born. However, he also fled to Holland with his family and was deported from Westerbork in 1944 via Theresienstadt to Auschwitz, where he was murdered on September 28, 1944. | ||||

Together with his five years older brother Joseph, Bruno had taken over the manufactured goods business of his parents Johanna (née Spier) and Samuel Lilienfeld. He spent part of his life with his sister Ruth in Frankfurt am Main and was murdered in the Minsk ghetto. | |

The businessman Joseph, who was born in Rees, took over his parents' business together with his brother Bruno. In his spare time he was a member of a bowling club. He married his wife Paula (née Spanier) on November 4th, 1920 and gave birth to a daughter ten years later on January 15th, 1930, who, however, was stillborn. A year later in August the couple moved to Erfurt. After his deportation in 1941, he died two years later in the Minsk ghetto. | ||||

Helene Sternberg and Abraham Albert Spanier, who owned a clothing store, gave birth to their daughter Paula Spanier (later Lilienfeld) in Kalkar on June 13, 1900. Her father managed to escape to Amsterdam, so that, unlike Paula, he was not deported to Minsk. There she was murdered in 1943. | ||||

In addition to her four brothers Ernst (born 1893), Joseph (born 1896), Leo (* 03.01.1900 † 19.06.1900) and Bruno (born 1901), she was the youngest daughter of the Lilienfeld couple. She lived briefly with her brother Bruno in Frankfurt am Main and was deported to Westerbork on June 21, 1943 and from there to Theresienstadt on April 5, 1944. On February 28, 1945 she was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp. | ||||

Emil Isaac was born on April 30th, 1899. Isidore and Ernestine Isaac were his parents. Emil Isaac Rosa (nee David) married in Dinslaken on October 15, 1933 and again on the same day in a Duisburg synagogue. He worked in the feed factory Wolff and was active in the boxing club. Together with Rosa, he had a daughter on May 10, 1934 who was named Margot. On August 21, 1934 he and his family fled to Rees. In December 1941 he was finally deported to Riga with his wife and daughter and murdered. | |

Ernestine Isaac (née Efraim) was born on January 8th, 1871 in Neudamm and married Isidor Isaac. Together with him she had four children (Emil, Herta, Walter Wolf, Selma). On July 21, 1942, she and her husband were deported from Düsseldorf to Theresienstadt. | ||||

Esther Gwirzmann was born in Belarus in 1894. She was the wife of Louis Marcus. Her children were Hanni (born June 23, 1920 in Rees, still lives today in Amsterdam / NL), Gideon (born August 22, 1922 in Rees, still lived in Herzlia / Israel in 1983), Boris (born September 20, 1924 in Rees) and Ruth (born February 5, 1930 in Rees, still lives today in Tel Aviv / Israel). Esther lived with her husband first in Rees and later in Arnhem. In 1942 she and Louis Marcus tried to flee, but they were killed in Auschwitz on October 27/29, 1942. | |

Louis Marcus was born on March 22nd, 1890 in Rees and was the son of Jacob Levy Marcus (born on August 13th, 1843 in Rees and died on April 16th, 1925 in Rees, a cattle dealer) and Nanny Cahn (born in Stommeln in 1850 and died on February 26, 1899 in Rees). Louis Marcus was the eldest child in the family, along with his two brothers and sister, and was the only one to perish during the Second World War . Louis Marcus was a grain and cattle dealer. In 1919 he married his wife Esther Gwirzmann in Berlin, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. In 1929 he served on the Rees City Council for the "Economic Party". After April 1, 1933, he was taken into protective custody and taken to Rees City Prison, but fled to Arnhem. He lived there with his family until 1942. He brought three of his children to Switzerland to protect them from deportations, and tried to escape with his wife and youngest daughter. Louis Marcus and his wife Esther were arrested, however, and then deported from Mechelen (Malines) to Auschwitz, where they arrived on October 24, 1942 and died on October 29 and 27, 1942. | ||||

Kurt Sander was born on June 12th, 1927. After the Reichspogromnacht he was smuggled into the Netherlands by his mother, where he and his brother Herbert went to a children's home in Arnhem. Kurt and Herbert were captured in a raid in 1940 and deported to the Sobibor concentration camp in Poland. He was murdered there in 1943. | |

Herbert Sander was born on September 30th, 1931. Together with his brother Kurt, he was smuggled into the Netherlands after the Reichspogromnacht, where they came together to a children's home in Arnhem. Both were captured in a raid in 1940 and deported to the Sobibor concentration camp. In 1943 he was murdered there. | ||||

Hertha Sander was born on January 2nd, 1897. She only lived in Isselburg with her husband Max Sander and their children, Helmut, Liesel, Kurt and Herbert, and moved to Rees in 1933. Their fifth child, Walter, was born in Rees.
During the Reichspogromnacht on November 10th, 1938, she and her children fled from the synagogue to the Isaac family. In December 1938 she smuggled her children to the Netherlands with the help of an acquaintance of her uncle, where she hoped that her children would be safe. She and her husband were relocated to the Riga ghetto in December 1941 and evacuated to the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig in 1944, where she died in 1944. Of their children, only the two elders, Helmut and Liesel, survived the Holocaust. |

Walter Sander was born on September 13, 1933 in Rees and was thus the youngest child of the Sander family.
After the Reichspogromnacht he was smuggled into the Netherlands by his mother Hertha at the age of five, where he grew up first with the Sealtiel foster family and later with the von Dijk family. He and his foster family were taken to the Westerbork transit camp and after 3 days they were deported to Auschwitz. He was murdered in 1943 and at the age of ten was the second youngest Holocaust victim from Rees. |

Max Sander was born on January 25th, 1892 and later lived with his wife Hertha in Isselburg, where he worked at the Isselhütte. They had five children together.
In January 1933 they moved to Rees, where he found new work at the Jewish animal feed factory Wolf. Although he fought for Germany in World War I, which is why he felt safe, he was arrested after the Reichspogromnacht and taken to the detention cell of the town hall. From there he was deported to the Dachau concentration camp and later to the Buchenwald concentration camp. At the beginning of January 1939 he was released again, but in December 1941 he and his wife were relocated to the Riga ghetto. When this was dissolved, they were evacuated to the Stutthof concentration camp in Danzig. From there he was taken to Bergen-Belsen, where he died in 1945, one month before the British liberated him. |
